Mageia in Distrowatch Top Ten Distributions

Postby Mag » Dec 5th, '11, 16:50

I said in another post, Mageia entered the ranks of Distrowatch. (Note to the marketing team)
Congratulations and good job :D...

Well.....

We had that kind of infos and discussions about ranks in Distrowatch several times. It's useless to open the discussion again about the worth of the DW ranking and the reasons of the ranking. What I see and what is good news, though, is that Mageia is marching upwards the shorter the timespan. It is on #17 in the 12-months period and on #11 in the 6-months ranking. Which states at least that there is an interest for information about Mageia (although it has kept the #11 in the 3-month ranking).

@wobo: Actually the above linked list of Major Distributions is no ranking, as i see it :)

Yes, I saw that but it seems that DW is taking this "Top Ten" from its own ranking, so ....

Not that I mind, though! :) Being listed on such a page only makes people interested!

I see this morning that Mageia and Mandriva are
neck and neck at 695. I suspect that by the
beginning of 2012 Mageia will consistently
outrank Mandriva for activity on Distrowatch.

If you look at the last three months or the last 30 days Mageia is already well above Mandriva - if that means anything.

This is great news though. It is being classified as a "major distribution" which will likely make more people try Mageia out. I imagine many will stay for Mageia is great in almost every way. If Mageia keeps this up it will only have up to go

Whoo!
As of noon GMT on December 25th 2011 Mageia (ranked 10 with 699) is ahead of Mandriva (ranked 11 with 693).
That's in the last 6 months category.
Since the ranking is based on an average of unique visits per day over the designated time period, this really doesn't mean much.
A better indicator for how many people are using Mageia would be a downloads counter on the servers.

It means alot, it shows interest in Mageia. I've downloaded Isos about 5 times so that's not a very good indicator either lol

A fanboy who makes clicking on Mageia a part of his daily life means even less.
What means something is a stable position. Not caused by a short hype or a new release or other short term events. I'd rather see Mageia on a stable #6 or #7 in the 12-month table than on #1 in the 3-month-category and going down afterwards.

Mageia, is on its way up that's what matters. It is a healthy distribution that is getting some hype. But the fact remains the higher it is in that list the more users who will try it and in the end the more users who will stick with it.

I see Mageia is ranked #10 over Mandriva at #11
today. I suggest Mageia will remain in the top
10 on through 2012.

What about a public counter on the main website showing the number of unique Mageia installations, together with other statistics which could be easily displayed automatically (like number of identity.mageia.org accounts, active forum users, active packagers etc. or similar things all around Mageia)

Does that exists or are you suggesting it? It doesn't seem it would be that hard to do. Just check if that PCs hardware address has been used for an installation before.

Lol. I figured only Devs would have access to that. I'm not that interested in how many users Mageia has, as much as its potential for further growth. Being in the top 10 on Distrowatch is a very good start

Remember, Mageia is a community distro? There are no ressources that aren't public in that regard ...

Yet another URL http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=popularity. For the last long while, Mandriva was around 600..700 when I looked. Mageia seems rather high when I looked today at about a one month spurt of around 950.

I took a quick look to see if perhaps it was due to a recent announcement like maybe Alpha, but I didn't see any (unless it was due to the last Alpha2).

Maybe Mageia is becoming interesting to other users looking for alternatives.

And there will definitely come another increase of interested people in the second half of January, that is, if Mandriva goes belly-up on January 16th, as it looks by now.

Direct follow-ups to this message are to be found at the topic "Mandriva finished for good?"

hmmmm well public statistics are already available
* from so called social networks, see http://mageiacauldron.tuxfamily.org/Blo ... Statistics for evolution from day 1 (even 600 BC if you follow the link, I'll update graphic when I find some time, I would prefer identi.ca as a free medium would have larger support than the 2 others...)
* see previous link for mailing-list activity (from gmane consolidation)
* from effective downloads, stats available at http://www.mageia.org/en/downloads/
* I did not provide distrowatch stats, as I do not have access to original data (only an interpretation through HPD at distrowatch http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=popularity )
* other stats, more relevant, could be taken into account imho (diaspora? awstats for public mageia page? others?)
* in the end, stats remain that: justs stats, which require interpretation :D

I'll welcome your comments about future interpretations :P

Looking at February's Distrowatch http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=popularity, it seems that Mageia has grabbed some more popularity past CentOS as well.
