[SOLVED]startx deprecated

Somewhere on one of the forums, I remember seeing the statement that "startx" is deprecated.

Can anyone explain to me why this is?

After an update to systemd broke my graphical login manager(KDM), I found that I had to log in to a text tty and then run "startx" to get my GUI.

If startx is deprecated, what has replaced it?

That is because startx has no support for login session/seat handling - which is done by logind nowadays.
Deprecated does not mean it doesn't exist or work anymore at all, it means it's not supported anymore and should not be used, as some stuff might break.
Either use the scripts that directly start a desktop session (startgnome, startkde, startlxde or whatever) or start it via the service of the login manager you use.

For more details see e.g. http://archives.mageia.org/zarb-ml/mage ... 12747.html or google for it.
