Hi everyone,

rpmdrake does not provide the latest kernel (3.16.1) and I wonder if I could download (www.kernel.org) this kernel, compile it on my laptop and install it on my system...

The background to this question is that my wlan adapter RTL8723BE still doesn t work on my LenovoB5400, and I hope that a minor recent kernel might do the trick.

Any advice ?

For the question about your wireless adapter, that's usually not a matter of kernel updates, but ensuring that the correct driver is used and that firmware is available.

Note that right now I am using a wifi usb-adapter (AVM Berlin).

I tried to boot the Cauldron LiveDVD and managed to get the RTL8723 adapter to work, though the connection kept being interrupted...

Apart from that, it seems for the Realtek RTL8723 the wrong driver is loaded. wl is used for Broadcom devices, check http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 (especially the bottom parts and supported devices list).

Seems to me you need one of those http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/rtl819x and it seem this one, which seems only supported from kernel 3.15 and above:

rtl8723be is a PCI-E driver for RTL8723BE devices (3.15+).

Could you please post the output as root of

hi, iam noob in linux, i'd been casual user of linuxmint for 2 years now. My LM17.1 have been working fine since i update the kernel to 3.17.4. Can I do the same on mageia somebody from openmandriva used the kernel from rosa web, can somebody tells me how to install theese kernel

You might try the rtl8723ae driver, which is provided with the stock Mageia 4, or you might download the rtl8723be driver from github and just compile it rather than the entire kernel.

While there is no particular reason why you should not compile the entire kernel, since you have to ask the question the way you asked it, you probably would find it to be a long and difficult process. You would learn a lot, but if you start with a known good kernel and simply compile one driver for it, you will find that to be much easier under any circumstances.

now my wifi is working, by simply install Mageia5 beta 1, it come up with kernel 3.17
