[RESOLVED]KDE and more than two displays

Postby duncangareth » Jul 2nd, '14, 22:09

I have a Lenovo W510 with Mageia 4. Using the system settings tool, I can have two active displays at one time, even though the utility shows a third display in "ghost" form.
Here are two working scenarios:

1. Laptop display and external display via vga port.

2. Laptop display and external display via Display port, using either a Display Port to HDMI adapter or a Display Port to DVI adaptor.

What I would like to do is have three active displays:

1. Laptop screen
2. External screen attached to Display Port
3. External screen attached to the standard VGA port.

If I try to activate the third display, nothing happens, even though the system settings tool shows all three displays.

It would really help me with my work if I could use the laptop screen for email, documentation, web browsing, etc., and an external 27" display that I have for programming and a 24" TV for multimedia stuff.

Does anyone have an idea where I might look to see if I can fix this problem?

That really depends how those are wired internally. I've got a similar issue with a Thinkpad T420 with hybrid graphics (nvidia optimus).
The VGA display is hardwired to the Intel GPU, the digital displays are wired to the nvidia graphics.
If you want to control it dynamically during runtime, it's pretty hard to more then 2 displays. There are possibilities although, check
e.g. https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi ... 4/#3982224
or maybe http://zachstechnotes.blogspot.de/2012/ ... -w520.html which has a good explanation about the underlying
issues and the internal wiring. The difference is in "muxed" vs. muxless.

Basically with newer linux distros you have at least four choices on hybrid graphics (in no particular order)
- use bumblebee, run graphics on one display, and only use second GPU ondemand when you need OpenGL acceleration
- run two Xservers, one on each GPU, combined into one big X screen - probably worst choice, no xrandr possible, OpenGL only on same chips
- use display/render offloading (linked in above nvidia forums thread) and compute the third display on one GPU, and only display it through the other GPU on the display attached to it
- use PRIME, check e.g. http://airlied.livejournal.com/#item76723
- something more special, use a virtual xinerama screen, check e.g. https://github.com/liskin/hybrid-screenclone or for the other way around https://github.com/harp1n/hybrid-windump

Thanks for the info.

I have an idea that the W510 has the same setup as the T420. I am going to see if I can get the VGA screen to run independently.

To conclude this thread, I have to say that I am not able to have three simultaneous displays on the W510. This is only possible on later models, starting with the W520. Drat!!!

It is definitely possible to have more then two screen simultaneously. Check options 1,2 and 4 from the list above.
Two colleagues of mine each run 4 screen from a T420.

Doc,

I think the W510 uses an earlier configuration than the T420 which is similar to the W520. I am not 100% sure, but there are no BIOS/CMOS options relating to the two chips that you find on the T420 and the W520.

Please show the output of lspcidrake -v and/or a link to your exact model.
E.g. for some models that only have an Intel chip you can enable three screens out of the box ...

Please next time use code tags as explained in ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mandriva/m ... e_tags.ogv

I don't see any Intel graphics component.

Currently it seems only the discrete nvidia chip is enabled.

You still forgot to mention the exact model of your W510 ...

Sorry, I shall do so as soon as I can turn it over. It's busy right now running some backups to external drives, and backups from other external drives to different ones, and it's hooked up with umpteen cables and halfway through a large update. I don't want to upset the wee beastie by moving it at this precise moment.

I am expecting the backups, etc., to be completed in a couple of hours.

A belated follow-up. Having worked with later Thinkpads, namely the W530 and various T540 models, it appears that it is not possible to have three simultaneous displays on a W510. The hardware doesn't support it correctly. Obviously this problem was addressed by Lenovo becaue the later models work fine.
