Serious problem with Mageia installer

Postby Sombreron » Mar 5th, '14, 05:44

Hello guys, I wanted to install Mageia and I downloaded the .Iso from the main page and followed the instructions to do it.
I wanted to use it as my main OS without windows or any other OS. So in the installation process I chose the option to use the
whole HDD. After that, the installer asked me to restart the system. When the sistem is up again, i open the installer and when i click
Next it shows me the words "Please wait" or something like that and it closes by itself. Now it seems like the HDD got formatted and i
can't boot Ubuntu, i'm using now the live Usb of Mageia. I need help.

Sorry, i did not understand. You wanted to use Mageia as your main OS, without windows or any other OS (including ubuntu?). How can you expect to still have ubuntu installed, if you choosed use the whole HD to install mageia? "Use HD" simply means "format HD and create new partitions".

Sorry to say that, but you lost all your data at the time you formatted your hard disk. If you want to recover something, you need to use recovery tools to restore the old partitions, or at least to be able to copy your personal files...

If you want to recover your files, do not boot with mageia on HDD. Keep using the live usb mageia, otherwise you will loose your data, because the system will be writing information on disk, and overwriting your previous files. Actually, do not use your computer, until you have the recovery tools to recover your files. Use other PC to learn how to get and use recovery tools, get an extra external HD to backup your files and, next time, keep backup of your files ;)

Sombreron

I have to agree your description of events may well lead us to think you have misunderstood the meaning of use entire harddisk.

but i also read from this, its left you with a non functioning system mageia wise.

if you expected ubuntu to be there after installing mageia in this way, then im afraid the problems not with the installer
but a novice installing an operating system, without fully understanding what he is doing.

However mageia should be running from your hard idisk and presenting you with a much better outlook then you had with ubuntu (in my opinion).

if it is not, then we need to know much more about your system first.

linux does not get the same exposure as say windows on every concievable bit of hardware, and therefore some hardware needs a little help
to get going. This is not a fault of linux, but more a reflection of the small percentage of the population of earth trying it out and feeding back
problems.

so let us know what the hardware is and we may be able to help you make the best of your situation
