Freeze in LiveDVD boot

Postby Beefalo » Feb 8th, '14, 20:55

Hello ppl,

when using the livedvd image on usb drive i get stuck b4 login screen. the top 20% of the screen is covered with megeia back ground and 80% of the screen stays black.

steps already taken:
- trying KDE and GNOME LiveDVD on usb stick, installed with usb-imagewrite and manually with dd
- added nomodeset to boot option
- trying all kind of kernel options (no acpi, safemode etc...)
- try swtich to different tty but computer apperas to be unrespondive

all with same result, stuck at the same time.

This problem is stupid to describe and i have no clue how to get more detailed information :S.

Cheers

Could you take a picture from the monitor, what it looks like during boot?

Also, if you press Esc key, do you see any more details in the messages? At what step does it stop?

I cant ESC when i gets stucked...

When I esc b4 I see lot of "green" OK's, a few Failed with some legacy module loading problem (but a quick google suggested it is unrelated to the freeze), then screen flashes/output is cleared and it freezes

What computer/laptop make and model do you have, and with what graphics chip is is equipped?

Same here with Mageia 4 Live CD KDE 32-bit. My laptop is HP 6910p, Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary). If I boot with xdriver=vesa I get ahead that point but after that neither in live mode, nor after installation can change the resolution of the screen. For a reference, Mageia 3 works fine.

You could, but only the limited choices that vesa driver offers, per your screenshot. But maybe RandR doesn't work properly with the vesa driver.

Can you try to use nomodeset as kernel boot option? In Grub bootmenu press F3 then select -> Default and then append nomodeset in the input line that appears.

I do not know what is it with the Live CD I am trying to use cause the signatures from the website

$ md5sum Mageia-4-LiveCD-KDE4-en-i586-CD.iso
45541fa5e15e20633ccdcfc810fe1578

$ sha1sum Mageia-4-LiveCD-KDE4-en-i586-CD.iso
17de7f954957f8245c5af42525779fa323ed9d95

match perfectly but under F3 there are 4 options
1 text
2 600x400
3 800x600
4 1024x768
and by default it shows 800x600 so I left it there. There is DEFAULT under F6 so I left it there too.
The nomodeset doesn't work but there is a difference - it hangs with a blank/black screen. This happens a few seconds after the second bubble shows up.
For now the only 2 options that boot are xdriver=vesa which gives max resolution 1024x768 and xdriver=fbdev which gives only resolution 800x600. Either way besides from the resolution limitations I get and two vertical black stripes on both sides of the screen.
Here is the xdriver=fbdev shot:
