How to get Synaptic

Postby dougmack » Nov 20th, '13, 20:42

I'd really like to get Synaptic for Mageia. I read the other posts about porting it, but there were no answers, and a lot of carping and complaints and someone wanting Ubuntu repos.
I just want Mageia repos, whatever they are. (I'm new to Mageia, but I don't see anything as user-friendly as Synaptic.) So can somebody tell me how to get Synaptic and install it, please?
Thanx for your input--doug

There are two ways, either get a src.rpm for a distro that's similar to Mageia, say Fedora.
http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/ ... 20.src.rpm
Then rebuild it under Mageia, howto for that: viewtopic.php?f=41&t=5530

The other way would be to get the latest .deb package for synaptic, and try to convert it with alien.
This is explained a bit here: viewtopic.php?p=40358#p40358

See the links that I provided in my response to your other post:

When you start with a new distro there is a learning curve, but the Mageia package management tools are as good as any (and IMHO better than most), once you get used to them.

Even if you did succeed in installing synaptic, you may find that it won't function. As it's name implies it is a GUI for the apt package management system. Mageia uses the urpm package management system.

Update: If you want synaptic, I'd upload the rebuilt package for Mageia somewhere. Are you on i586 or x86_64 arch?
Code: Select all
uname -m
will tell you.

But as it uses apt, it doesn't know about Mageia repositories, so it cannot be used currently to install software.
