Boot Failure after Partition change

Postby Plisgyn » Jun 13th, '13, 00:07

I have managed to stop Magei 2 booting by removing a partition i.e
Initial Disk Partitions were 1- Windows 1GB 2. Windows 7 3. Extended Partition containing 5. Root 6. Swap 7. Home
Changed Disk Partitions now are 2. Windows 7 3. Extended Partition containing 5. Root 6. Swap 7. Home

Windows still boots o/k but Mageia fails to find Partition 5 and ideas how to solve this problem?

Note - As I had just removed Partition 1 and not moved the others I have recreated it but Mageia will still not boot

It seems to me that you had your boot loader installed in "Partition 1". Since you removed it loader also vanished. You can try to boot from Live media and recreate boot config.

If you need more details please provide us how exactly you booted before. For example did you use Grub legacy, what's in your MBR (probably Windows 7 boot loader) and what did you do to boot Mageia previously.

The boot loader is in the MBR and grub not grub2 is used.
On booting it fails with - (hdo,5) /boot/gfxmenu File not found then goes to the grub menu.
Trying to boot Mageia from grub fails as follows --
Code: Select all
Booting Linux Kernel (hd0,5) /boot/vmlinux etc  Cannot Mount Selected Partition - Press any key to continue.

Windows 7 boots o/k from grub menu.

Booting from the Mageia2 64bit from DVD in Rescue Mode and trying to restore the MBR fails as follows --
Code: Select all
(hd0,5) Error 21 Selected Disk does not Exist
setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0)  Error 12 Invalid Device Requested.

Going into Console Mode after mounting Partitions and doing a df shows sda5 and sda7 partitions mounted,
and /boot/grub/device.map shows
Code: Select all
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb

Normally on booting it came straight up to the grub menu where either Mageia or Windows 7 was selected

You can try as root to see partitions and report the result:
Code: Select all
sfdisk -l

Obviously your grub has some errors in config. I think that number 5 in "hd0,5" is wrong in menu.lst. To fix it see procedure or search for other topics on grub legacy. Posting menu.lst will also help to identify issue.
