This appears to be a known kernel problem, from googling, but I cannot find a solution. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Dmesg shows:
[drm:i915_report_and_clear_eir] *ERROR* EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking
which may or may not be related to the problem that the usb mouse stops working after a suspend on my hp pavillion dm1 laptop.
[Linux hp-dm1.fdservices 2.6.38.7-desktop-1.mga #1 SMP Sun May 22 11:37:00 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux]
Thanks
Andrew

It looks as if the two incidents are not connected.
If I unplug the USB mouse after the resume, and plug it back in it is not recognised.
BUT if I plug it into a different port it is.
Now, how do I do that from the command line?

It is quite interesting actually, lsusb shows the logitech usb device before suspend, but not after.
Re-plugging the usb key still does not show it up.
Plugging it into a different usb port and it shows up until the next suspend.
I only have three usb ports so after three suspends I have run out.
All the usb ports are set to persist==1
Thanks for the response
