[SOLVED] Help With Broadcom Wireless Drivers

Postby nikhil » Jun 4th, '11, 19:04

Hi,

I downloaded the Mageia 1 DVD and installed it on my Acer laptop, the installation was smooth but my Broadcom wireless doesn't work.
After reading the forum i came to know that this is because of the free software policy of mageia.

Could someone tell me exactly what packages to download on windows then copy over to Mageia and get the wireless to work.
If that isn't possible then can i install from Broadcom's website.

If anybody knows how to do that I would be grateful, If not the kindly suggest distributions for which it works out of the box.

Many thanks and regards,
Nikhil Bhardwaj.

[Solved] Help With Broadcom Wireless Drivers

Hi,
I am very happy to inform you that my problem has been solved. I asked at the #mageia irc channel where people helped me out.
I needed to install dkms-broadcom-wl and to load the module wl in place of brcm80211 and now my wireless works perfectly.
Many thanks to the helpful folks at the irc.

Could you post step-by step instructions here or to the wiki so we don't have to keep boring the IRC folk?
Thanks!

In short it should be, as root (and with non-free-repositories enabled)

Code: Select all
urpmi dkms-broadcom-wl
echo blacklist brcm80211 >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mga

from his descriptions.

Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!
