I Broke It All to Crap...

Postby gloomshroud » Nov 30th, '12, 13:16

So, I've messed up my system so badly I'm writing to you on my phone. I am brand spanking new to linux and I have really no clue. O managed to install via live cd. I have a Sony brave be tv and an HP lcd monitor. I attempted.to update my system to enable dual display. However, I managed to get it partially working but it wasn't the best. The settings only showed one monitor, tho I could see on both. So I started messing with aticonfig. It went to pot quickly after that. Couldn't tell you all I did...I just know nothing displays on any monitor now. My noob is showing I know

Update

Managed to use failsafe prompt to get this message after remembering a command aticonfig --query-monitor

Default.adapter ATI mobility radio 4200 series
Ati_dm: X Window is not running Or $DISPLAY is not set.

Still clueless...but maybe that helps those of you who know what's up

If you can get to a log in screen (non-graphical, looks like a terminal) then you can log in as root and run XFdrake. If ati doesn't work after that, try doing it again but select the vesa driver, which should at least get you to a graphical desktop. Then you can maybe try a proprietary driver, or a more advanced kernel.

Thank you! Worked like a charm. Still can't config my dual display, but at least it works. I'm going to attempt a fresh install and run the ccle from there off the dload

For dual display, i.o. using ati-config, did you already try krandrtray? That is an graphical KDE application that allows you to configure the screen for most any driver without needing to fiddle with config files and stuff. Much easier and less risky!
