Hi Mageia community,

I speak Spanish, so sorry for my spelling. This is the problem.

I already download the CD Live Mageia 2 stable version. I complete my installation but when I go to boot my partition with Mageia I received the message that i need install the ATI Graphics Drivers trough the command drakx11 and next restart the graphical enviroment with systemctl default.

I run the drakx11 without any problem and i config the parameters (However the config is already setup by default). so to this point all is good the drakx11 ask me if i want to save the changes and i say YES them he said you need restart for make the changes y say "Aceptar" and finally the problem comes, because the system show me the console again and if i write "systemctl default" all come back like a first step and if i write "reboot" is the same thing.

SO.. I cant do that the drakx11 make all changes that i need. It show me the setup but never make changes. (Into config dialog at final of drakx11 it show me keyboard: "" and mouse type:"" nothing for there two things)

I hope that you guys can stand me and help me please. ^^

I have to guess here as ive setup one pc with ati graphics, and when i did it was choosing the wrong driver.

This maybe why you are in a loop.

Try an alternative ati driver, something like a rage64 thats what i did, and it worked, once you are past this it may
Be easier to see why its going wrong.

Alternativly a simplr vesa driver, they work almost always with all cards as they use thecards vesa bios to set them up.

I try with these drivers and another ones but any work, I don't know what I do wrong, I a huge shame. I really want install mageia in my system. I f you have any suggestions or tips. please let me know. ^^

So there are no error messages, nothing telling you why it doesn't work? Nothing in /var/log/Xorg.0.log saying why x server doesn't load?
Remember: "It doesn't work" is not really an exact error description

What is the model of your ATI Card?

ATI Radeon HD 5650 ^^

Have you made absolutely sure you installed ATI's Non-Free Software. (Drivers, Firmware, Kernel Mods, etc.)

Mageia's handling of the ATI issue is less than optimal as you need non-free software which digigold mentioned.

Using drakx11 you can choose "Xorg|vesa" which will give you a working desktop.

From there go to "Mageia Control Centre" > "Configure media sources for install and update"
Setup a full set of sources making sure "Nonfree Release" and "Nonfree Updates" are enabled.

Running drakx11 again accepting the defaults and saying yes to using the propitiatory driver should give you full use of your video card.

Well, i choose these Drivers and many more and no work, after choose i write "reboot" or "systemctl default" and no work! Too many hours trying and no work. :/

I had that same startup issue. Just know what screen resolution you have. Go into the drakx11 config, and manually input all of the parameters, while logged in as root. Make sure you use the proprietary "Radeon HD 2000 and later" drivers, save the configuration, and reboot. Worked like a charm for me, and I have not had any more display issues.

Glitch thanks for your time, but i do this too.. My resolution is 1366x768 i config drakx11 in this resolution and drivers like you say but is the same think :/ (after do this i write reboot) what is the diference between reboot and "systemctl default"??

Please have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... rd_drivers especially the paragraph "DVDs & Dual" as it tells how to select a working failsafe graphics driver, that way you get at least a desktop.

Yep, that was exactly the one i was referring to:

boot in safe mode.
go in the emergency console
run XFdrake and chose Vesa

I am doing right now! I write you from mi cellphone I already try with VESA generic and don't work and going to try with Xorg VESA and them if don't work I try with the next step. However I don't stand very clear the next step say that run safe mode and i write in console the commands ? I have Internet

Xorg VESA dont work too.. I am config resolution in 800x600 because the note say that VESA don't support widescreen, now when I write in console "urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist" I get this error: "no se pudo encontrar una replica de la lista de replicas $MIRRORLIST" translate is something like "can't find a replic from $MIRRORLIST replics list" I think. Please leave me a feedback

After your selected vesa driver what did you do afterwards? Did you try a reboot yet?

Yeap i try with reboot and i have the same black screen with the message (the screenshot that i show you before)

You said the LiveCD had worked just fine, boot from the CD and see what it tells you about your system.

Guys i can't use mageia 2 because i have amd radeon hd 6850 video card and i have the same problem like duranmla, can someone do something to fix that in the future?
I don't know why all this problems with the amd cards.

Other top 10 distros don't have this problem with amd cards.

I had that exact same error after updating a box w/ a ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4250 from 2 to Cauldron. I found that the display and the fglrx software was not the issue as I tested it in drakx11 and it worked fine, but I still could not enter run level 5. I then reinstalled the X server and added many drivers/pkgs from Xorg. This cleared the problem right up. So I guess what I'm saying is I suspect that your issue does not lie with your display adaptor, but is more likely caused by something amiss with your x server.

Let's try and keep the comments helpful shall we? Also that statement is entirely false. The only real issue I've ever run into with a Radeon in linux was with Mint. Also worth noting, is that for my primary laptop, Mageia w/non-free fglrx runs KDE w/composite with less issues, and with substantialy better performance than any other distro I have tried to date!
