LiveCD hangs during boot

I'm having trouble installing Mageia 2 64bit KDE, on an HP Pavilion g6. It would hang during the boot process, so I tried passing the boot option nomodeset, and deleted splash quite to see what was going on. The last message before the boot hangs is:
Using '/etc/ld.so.conf.d/GL/standard.conf' to provide 'gl.conf.' [OK]

I also tried putting the iso on a USB Stick using dd, and it won't boot at all...
isolinux.bin missing or corrupt.
error: no such partition

The md5sum checks out.

When does it hang? Hardware?

I have a possibly similar issue with a Toshiba laptop with an AMD E300 processor, ATI 6310 graphics, etc. By luck I discovered that if I boot Windows first, then restart and boot Mageia 2 (either a LiveCD or installed) then everything is fine (in fact, I'm posting from it right now). After a shutdown it will boot fine until sometime after it starts X, on my installed system I get the login screen and can even type for a little while ... sometimes it locks up before I can finish logging in, sometimes I clear the login screen but never get KDE to fully load.

Strangely (or maybe not) if I use the keyboard to switch to a textmode virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2 for example) even though the graphical login is still running in the background the system will never lockup until I switch back to the graphical terminal.

Still no other solution (than booting Windows first) nearly a month later. You can see my thread here, if it sounds similar.

When does it hang? Hardware?

It hangs during the boot process. Intel Core i5, 8GB, Intel HD Graphics 3000 (screen native 1366x768). Audio unknown.

...booting to windows first helps...

Booting windows doesn't seem to have any effect.

Okay, then probably not related ...

Using the "nomodeset" option, I was able to get LinuxMint's liveCD to boot, and I installed LinuxMint... however, I only see a black screen as soon as LM starts booting. It seems to be related to the graphics hardware... which is odd, as I thot Intel worked well with Linux. Unless it still has that optima chip that I was hearing about? Any help?

For specific problems with Mint, maybe you're better of asking this in LinuxMint forums as there may be some other workarounds needed or other things to pay attention to?

similar thing happened to me yesterday, when i upgrade mageia 2 to 3(cauldron).

before upgrade, i installed gcc, kernel header, library. and compiled & installed XFCE 4.10.

tried XFCE 4.10 on mageia 2, and it works fine, then i downloaded NVIDIA binary driver(64 bit), yes my graphic card is from nvidia.

all is set, then i upgraded it to cauldron, reboot, then it hangs during boot, then i reboot and chose safe mode in grub.

in dropped safe mode root shell,
# init 3
<logged as root>
# ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-302.17.run --> ncurses characters broken.. anyway i could go on. :)
# reboot

then it boot fine again.(autologin on XFCE 4.10).
$ uname -a
Linux localhost 3.4.3-desktop-1.mga3 #1 SMP Wed Jun 20 18:08:28 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I wasn't asking for help with Mint, I'm trying to install Mageia. I tried installing Mint and got different results from Mageia, which I reported in hopes that it might give an idea as to the problem. The problem seems to relate to the video, which is odd, as I thot Intel worked well with Linux. But perhaps you're suggesting that I should give up on Mageia altogether?

Nope, i was just answering as you were asking for problem with that Mint installation and display problems.

For your initial post, does it hang during the boot of the installation medium (which one did you use by the way?) or after a successful installation on first boot of the installed system? In both cases, you may want to look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... rd_drivers

Thanks! That's got it. It booted with xdriver=fglrx which is really odd, as I thot the box had intel, but it didn't work with intel. Seems like it may have ATI. Anyhow, I now have a working Mageia on my laptop... which is cool, because I so disliked the Win Server 2008 that was on it, when I got it.

Seems you got hybrid graphics, as with most newer laptops.
