[SOLVED] Failure to find the install DVD

Postby rodgoslin » Jun 20th, '12, 12:56

[Solved] Has anyone come up with this problem? I recently noticed that the time was incorrect on the PC, relative to my domestic radio controlled clock, which was odd, since NTP was supposed to be enabled. It would seem, that upgrading from Mageia 1 to mageia 2 had resulted in the loss of NTP. No problem. I simply re-ticked the box for NTP.. The machine responded with a request to insert the install disk, which I did. However the Mageia Control Center, which presumably was doing this failed to find the disk, although the machine had acknowledged that the disk was there, and was readable with the File manager. Just in case the disk was corrupt, I burned another DVD. This was treated just as the original. It was there, and was readable, but the install system would no acknowledge its presence. I did, in the end solve the impasse by ascertaining the package name, finding it in the File Manager and installing it from there, but it's not a system that I would want to use in the common run of things. I had noticed this earlier on seeking to install packages, but there, it was spasmodic and after a try or two, the disk would be seen and the package installed. I'm pretty sure that it's not a problem with the disk drive since it works perfectly well at everything else

Hello,

If the system ask the DVD, that means the repositories aren't set. You should install them.

This (unable to locate DVD source) is a perennial problem. The easiest solution is to disable the DVD source and use the online sources.

Of course the repositories are set. I've been running Linux as the OS of choice ever since Mandrake 7.2, and this is the first time that I've come across the problem of one part of the system being unable to find the source disk, and the other half being able to use it without problem. Thanks Jim, your solution seems to be the admirable work round, with the bonus that I don't have to remember where I last put the install disk!. My view, in the past was that a package would be sourced from the DVD, unless the repository had a more update package. Since installing online is usually a fast process, it really does seem to be a good idea. I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes'

I wouldn't exactly say that the problem is solved, in that the problem still exists. A problem that I, personally have not come across before in Mandrake, mandriva or Mageia version 1. However Jim has suggested a workaround, which will do. However I cannot find an option to mark this topic solved, anywhere in the forum. A hint perhaps?

Actually this behaviour has never changed since old Mandrake times, it's still the same. If a package is in the repos, and on the local DVD repo in the same version, it will always use the DVD repo which perfectly makes sense ...
