I would go through the 3g setup in network center from the start.
Just like you setup wifi or any other network eqipment but choose 3g
And the choose your carrier etc.
I had one of the similar hauwei modems from vodaphone.
It used to work fine under mandriva 2010 but ive never been able to get it to work under mga1
Thats not to say it wont, now, but at the time the dialer codes were not right.
You sometimes have to play with the start scripts if you 3g operator codes are setup wrong.
Like old modems, you prob to young to remember them, 3g modems use a dialer script not unlike expect language to w
Program them via a serial comm port over usb.
This scipt is usualy the problem, and cant remember now but down under /etc somewere
I use find space dot to list the tree to find files im not sure where they exist, there will be a load of dialer scripts
Down there as part of pppd to protocol used to talk tcpip over serial one you have used the wizard to set it up if it does not work first time.
If you run ps -ef as you hit the connect button you will see what is being run, and that will lead you to the underlying ppp command and chat scripts
Ps sorry about some of the typos im using my tab and editings a bit painfull
