fglrx driver- laggy mouse and lost/repeated keypresses

Postby turboi » Jun 4th, '12, 20:02

Hello all. I have a problem with xorg on my laptop while using the fglrx or radeon driver. It happens using the i586 or x86_64 livecds or installed on hard drive using the accelerated drivers. This problem does not occur when using the install DVD, or booting into xorg on my installed Mageia partition with the vesa driver.

While typing or moving the mouse, the input is laggy and sluggish, as if the computer has a pentium or k5 rather than a phenom 2.2GHz. I have tried several usb mice. Some keypresses are lost as I type quickly, and some are repeated without even holding down the key. This backup system I am writing this post on right now with a C7 feels more responsive in comparison. The built-in touchpad on the laptop works ok; I think it is ps/2. I can attach log files to help figure out what is going on, but I haven't been able to find anything wrong in log files, dmesg, or by monitoring task manager/top.

This little bug with the mouse has made every distro released from 2011 onwards unusable with this laptop. Any help in solving or working around this bug will be greatly appreciated...

How did you confirm whether you were actually using the fglrx/radeon driver? And please show the output of
Code: Select all
dmesg | grep -e uhci -e ohci -e xhci
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

I can install the system to my hard drive and reboot into X using the vesa driver and responsiveness is fine. If I use drakconf and change the driver to one of the automatically chosen(proprietary) ones, then use the "test" option, X works in the test session, with the before mentioned lagginess and then the original X session with the vesa driver also becomes unusable. Also, X on the instal DVD works fine. I tried the newest testing version of Suse and it works OK. Xorg 1.6.5 on my PCLinuOS 2010 works great, then any distro from last year to now does this, up to openSUSE testing with xorg 1.11 something works OK...

This laptop is connected to a KVM switch but the probem also happens without it.

Here is a snippet from my xorg log:

Well, somebody recently told me that you have to set some special setting in xorg.conf for KVM switches, but i don't know details :(

This happens with or without the kvm. Besides, PCLinuxOS 2010 works perfectly, its just xorg newer than version1.7 or so...
