pdf files print very slow

Postby wsams » Nov 30th, '11, 17:19

PDF files take a very long time to print , once the file is in the que it takes 20-30 seconds or longer between sheets to print. I generally use adobe reader to open pdf files. When I use okular, it speeds up to a normal speed
. I have cups installed , but if it is a cups problem, wouldnt it affect okular too?
I have all printers connected via a lan and each terminal ( 3 ) is configured to use each printer ( 3) .
I do not have a central print server

Other distro forums seem to have many posts with the same problem

How would one start to identify the problem :?:

thank you

Walter

When you use lpr document.pdf on the command line to print, does it also take so long?

It also depends on which printing languages the printer in question supports.

How many printers?
How are they EXACTLY connected (directly to a router, Windows Machine, Linux Machine...etc)?
How did you configure your printer on Mageia?
Are there any servers running on your machine?
What arch. are you using and what version of Adobe Reader is it?

If your printer does not have a Postscript interpreter in it, the display software turns the file into pixels and prints the whole thing as dots. That can take a few seconds to accomplish.

This is just a guess since I don't know what your printer has in it.

I apologize for not following up sooner- too many demands on my time but I still have the problem

When I print a saved pdf file with <lpr document.pdf> the print job immediately goes to the printer and prints as it should.

I have 2 ea. brother hl5370DW and 1 Minolta bizhub 250 connected to my lan through a gigabit switch. the switch is connected to my router. all desktops are connected to the switch all are hardwired Ethernet connections.

I use MCC to configure each printer on each desktop the device URI is lpd://192.168.0.202/9100 for the printer closest to my desk and the one with I have the most issue.

I use Mageia 1 64 bit os
Adobe reader 9
I have no server running on my desktop or the other desktop that has the same issue ( it is the same setup as mine)

the driver is Brother HL-5370DW BR-Script3 so I assume it has a postscript interpreter

When I open with okular printing is normal so it seems as though my issue is related to Adobe

I have cups running

I thank all who are helping me solve this issue

I'm not using Adobe since a long time, but wasn't it possible to supply the command which is used to print in the options?
Could you have a look what's currently set there?

Thank you for your time Doktor5000

the print screen does have an options screen where you can set the printer command

this is what mine has:
lpr -P walter -o OptionTrays=1Trays -o PageSize=Letter -o PageRegion=Letter -o CAPT=Middle -o BRMediaType=Plain -o InputSlot=AutoSelect -o ManualFeed=False -o Duplex=None -o TonerSaveMode=False -o Sleep=PrinterDefault -o ScreenLock=True -o BRReducedImage=False -o ImprovePrintOutput=None -o BRDensityAdjustment=-6

this seems to set a lot of "stuff"
I think I will try a large document with just lpr <name>.pdf and see what happens

I will post my results

thanks again

No joy

when trying to bypass the adobe printer command

the line showing the printer command in the adobe printer options screen was not editable. So the work around I can see is to use the command line to print a pdf or use okular.

Is there any special purpose you need Adobe Reader for, like digital signatures?

Otherwise this printer setting may not be changeable in Acrobat directly, but perhaps directly in one of it's config files,
somewhere below ~/.adobe if i remember correctly.
