Mageia 7.1 login issue

Postby pinnerite » Sep 6th, '20, 17:02

I was hopefully a returnee to Mageia after a gap of two years.

I downloaded the 7.1 ISO, burned it to a DVD and made a four)clean install.

I naively expected the install process to be as easy as it used to be.

I did not expect the grub boot-loader password question and tried the root password.
On the restart it could not log-in and it froze at the "Welcome to localhost" dialog.

I then did a second install but carefully watched each stage but achieved nothing new.

After the third installation I booted into the rescue option and got to the root prompt
and executed startx. This produced a desktop but I could not open the MCC.
Mageia was also unable to "see" my second screen.

On the fourth reinstall I entered no password at the grub boot-loader screen.
That did not improve matters.

I did report these events on the Mageia newsgroup but they appear to be unique.

I decided to seek some suggestions before giving up completely.

so, which .iso did you use to install?
A Live .iso requires user and admin password to be installed during first boot after the install has completed. the password installed during the Live install process is for the bootloader. just leave it blank, unless you require the bootloader to be password protected
did you verify the .iso before burning?
which software did you use to create your install medium?
You used a DVD optical medium , did you use a brand new -R or RW disk, burnt at x1?
You used a DVD optical, is the reader good?

is your hardware particularly new?
Please give an overview of your hardware by reporting
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v

Thank you for responding. I am repeating your questions, interleaved with my answers.

so, which .iso did you use to install?

Lest there be no doubt:

Mageia-7.1-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso

A Live .iso requires user and admin password to be installed during first boot after the install has completed. the password installed during the Live install process is for the bootloader. just leave it blank, unless you require the bootloader to be password protected

As you can see from my post, I did that on my 4th install.

did you verify the .iso before burning?

I just did it again:

root@albury:/home/alan/Downloads/Mageia-7.1-Live-Plasma-x86_64# md5sum Mageia-7.1-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso
76dc10e6e08c48d99db3f538b0af6049 Mageia-7.1-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso

A perfect match for Mageia-7.1-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso.md5

which software did you use to create your install medium?

k3b version 19.12.3 on a Mint 20 system.

You used a DVD optical medium, did you use a brand new -R or RW disk, burnt at x1?

No. A Verbatim R/W disk that previously held Mageia 6 believe it or not. Perfect in all respects.

You used a DVD optical, is the reader good?

The burn was made on a Pioneer-DVD-RW DVR-118L

But the install was from an Asus-DRW-24D5MT

Both are on the same platform. If either drive had defects this switch between them should show them up. It never has. However, they are not the original DVD drives on this machine

My hardware is getting on a bit. The motherboard and processor date back to 2009 as does 4GB of DDR RAM. The Hard drives, both DVD drives, power supply, processor heatsink and a further 4GB of RAM are more recent.

lcpcidrake will not run on Mint, so here is a synopsis.

Motherboard - Asus M4A785TD-V EVO
Processor - AMD Phenom II x4 955 Back Edition
Memory - 8GB of OCZ DDR3 PCR3-12800
Hard Drives - (2) Seagate 2TB Barracuda in ICY Box withdrawable caddies.
Graphics - (2) Radeon HD 4350 Cards, driving separate monitors.

It would be appreciated using quote- and/or code-tags, when replying to someones message.

For a great overview of existing BB-codes of which quote- and code-tags are part of, have a look at:

in the live session did you set up both cards using
Code: Select all
drakx11
before install?
otherwise, remove one video card and re-install.

Mageia Live sessions retain this, and lots of other changes made by the user, and transfer it to the installed system

Hell0,

I tried a network install from one of the installation disks.
It took AAGGes. This time. The speed test was but very SLLOOWW but it was still working

After that I installed Chrome using new the new chrome wiki {verry} good.

Another thing most my disks seem to have some wrong with them.

K3b reported that the file I was trying on to the DVD was too large, for the dvd.

Hmmm.

One again thanks
