Hi, I have a problem since the very begining. Very often, almost everyday, when I push shutdown button to get the dialog for ending sesion, shuting down or rebooting, nothing happens and finally I must open the console and halt or reboot using the command. why could this be happening?
thanx!!!

Are you using KDE or GNOME, or maybe even something else?

Are you first up to date ? which version of mageia are you using ? Mageia 1 , Cauldron ?
do you have any information available in ~/.xsession-errors ?
How did you install mageia? fresh install (via live-cd/dvd ) ?upgrade from mandriva ?
Are you using a specific logout sound ?

I know the problem description from cauldron, where it is a PAM migration issue, effectively a permission problem.

yep, I'm trying last mandriva in a netbook, while I keep Mageia as my main system in my desktop, and I have very similar problem in both (not exactly the same behavior: in Mandy I get the shut down dialog, but then it wont shut down and whnt I get it to start shuting down it stucks forever, and in mageia I don't get the dialog at all, but when I get it to shut down -using the console, for example-, it really shut downs or reboots and never stuck...

).

any way to solve it? it's strange, because sometimes it works fine, dialog appears and it shut downs or reboots, and some others it just don't respond to shutdown button...

I've experienced all of the above on
several systems ( Mandriva & Mageia ).
This going back many generations of
Mandriva. That's what ext4 and the
power button are for on my computers.

mmm, I configured it so power button should automatically shut down the system, but when this is happening power button doesn't respond either... I've been using this desktop for many years, so all my partitions are ext3 and I have too much important information to format them. any solution?

Came along some reports, people had issues because of the "System Notification Configuration".
In System Settings they changed the "Player Settings" into "No audio input", and in the event source "KDE Workspace" disabled playing a sound for "Logout".

it seems to work

I'll be happy when I can definitively confirm it

thanx!!

Would be nice if you could answer to mikala's questions ....
Also you could try if this works with another user, maybe try again as xguest.

now i see, sorry, first time i didn't realize about this message. I upgraded online from Mandriva 2010.2. it's mageia 1, I guess (not sure, the official update using mageia update system).
.xsession-errors is veeeeeeery long. should i look for something specially?
i was using borealis logout sound.
thanx!!!

ok so that explain why it was not catch by our upgrade script because we «work around it » this (from a « normal » mandriva upgrade ) with
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48 since
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=228005 (upstream bug) is still not fixed.
You just need to install the necessary codec (an easy way would probably to switch to phonon-vlc instead of installing various gstreamer plugins ) to ensure that kde can read your borealis logout sound.

ok, thank you all very much! now it seems to work. I'm using borealis logour sound again but now shut down menu appears and everything seems to work fine. it seems that it's working fine in the mandriva 2011.0 i'm testing on my netbook

if in next days there're bad news i'll report them but hipefully the problem is solved

hum ?
does it mean even with the logout sound disable you can't log out ? or that you need to disable it to log out ?
are you able to play this logout sound ?

so it is not related to this problem at all.
What's happening exactly ?
do you have anything useful in ~/.xsession-errors when you're requesting log out ?
Can you reproduce every time ?
Does it happen on a fresh session start ? in that case the ~/.xsession-errors would be really useful.
Could you also reproduce with a fresh user ? (for example the xguest user )

finally I guess it's really that f**king sound problem. now i have disabled logout sound but kde audio is enabled and it seems to work fine for the last 2 days. i tried with another user some days ago and there it works ok, but i have never configured it's notification system (it's unused).I've tried to check ~/.xsession-errors but I can't understand anything there
sorry for bothering so long with this! i won't enable logout sound any more, lets see if it works...
