Steps to track a system freeze - tools & inspection ?

This forum is dedicated to advanced help and support :

Ask here your questions about advanced usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about network and automated installs, complex server configurations, kernel tuning, creating your own Mageia mirrors, and all tasks likely to be touchy even for skilled users.

Steps to track a system freeze - tools & inspection ?

Postby jeevanism » Jun 15th, '20, 14:28

Hello,

I am running Mageia 7, everything working cool so far now, I experienced all of a sudden system freeze two different times. Both happened when I was browsing websites. I could not track what was the cause, I expect it would happen again. In that case, what are the steps to track the issue ? any tools we can use ? steps to follow ?

thank you

Re: Steps to track a system freeze - tools & inspection ?

Postby doktor5000 » Jun 15th, '20, 16:03

How did you recognise the freeze, what did you do when your system was supposedly frozen, how long did you wait, and what did you try to get a response from the system ?
Did switching to a different tty work ? Did you try to connect via ssh to your box? Did the system still respond to e.g. NumLock or CapsLock? Did it respond to magic keys? (those have to be enabled beforehand) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key

Also have a look at some previous thread on other causes for freezes and some context information: viewtopic.php?p=70258#p70258

And at the very least add the logs from the time when the system froze. E.g. when it happend during the previous boot, then get those logs
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab-1 > /tmp/journal.log

(-b-1 means the previous boot) and then attach them here, together with mentioning at what timestamp during the log period the freeze happened.

Both freeze happened when I was browsing internet - both FireFox and Opera, more than 7 tabs were opened with pages using lot of graphics
Did switching to a different tty work ?
No, it did not work

Did you try to connect via ssh to your box?
No, its my daily working laptop

Did the system still respond to e.g. NumLock or CapsLock? Did it respond to magic keys?
No total freeze happened.

well, no freeze happens so far, if it happens again, I will post details.

thanks for the replies.

My system has been freezing as well, I'll set up ssh to try next time it happens, but for now here's my journal.log
It just happens that in this case I was using firefox, but I've been having odd freezes no matter what I was doing at the time

Btw, the system got random freeze 3 times in last 2 days. I only have the log of the very last freeze, sorry for that but all 3 times the freeze happened in similar situation.

freeze happened when Opera browser / FireFox browser uses more than 4 tabs and opens some websites like Reddit, Wired or any websites with heavy multimedia content (video/audio)etc.
I am attaching the log of the last freeze
journal.log
SystemFreezeJournal
(300.53 KiB) Downloaded 100 times

I tried to understand but I am no expert, all I could read that
Code: Select all
" Jul 25 09:12:47 jeevanism org_kde_powerdevil[7391]: powerdevil: Scheduling inhibition from ":1.89" "/usr/bin/opera" with cookie 11 and reason "Playing audio "
This may / may not be the issue. But the freeze happened 3 times in 2 days worries me :( :(

My kernel : Kernel: x86_64 Linux 5.7.9-desktop-1.mga8
I am running Mageia 8 Alpha now - everything updated so far now

As this is another situation, you are running MGA8 now, i advise to open up a new topic into the sub-forum "Testing : Alpha, Beta, RC and Cauldron".
