Boot Problem kernel 5.6.14 [SOLVED]

Postby Germ » May 30th, '20, 03:10

kernel 5.6.14 takws 5-6 minutes to boot whereas the 5.5.15 kernel boots right up.

kernel options are identical for both kernels. Any ideas on why 5.6.14 takes so long to boot?

Thanks

Hello,
Have you tried
Code: Select all
 systemd-analyze blame | less

Is that for every boot, or only for the first boot? It's normal for the first boot, if you have some dkms drivers installed, as those need to be compiled for the new kernel.

But if you really want to know, you would need to look at the logs, to see where the time is actually spent
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab

You may want to attach that log here, so others could take a look.

systemd-analyze blame would only give a basic overview, on what service took longer. If it's the kernel itself, that would only show up in systemd-analyze, but it would not show why it takes longer.
Code: Select all
systemd-analyze
systemd-analyze blame

Ran the commands and didn't see anything obvious..I'll just stay with 5.5.15

I have a bigger problem now. I'll start a new thread.

Thanks for your time.

OK,I'm back on this one. Runnign 5.15.11-desktop-3.mga8. Haven't found anything.

Here's what shows during boot when it hangs 4 to 5 minutes:

I seem to have found a fix, but don't think I'll try it.

thats a bit of a jump.

on your next reboot, try 2 things

edit the grub menu boot line entry to remove "splash" and "quiet". this will show a text stream while booting, and you will note the time increments on the left.
this may give an indication where the holdup is.

depending on your hardware, if you have upgraded to an SSD, sometimes the random # generator does not initialize, (and has a 5 minute timeout), a dirty workaround is to move the mouse or tap the scratch-pad if a laptop.

OK, thank you. I'll try that edit next boot.

I haven't upgraded to an SSD. It's a laptop and still using a 320GB 2.5" SATA drive.

OK, I edited the boot line and it stops here for about 90 seconds and then boots on up:
Code: Select all
[1.600068] AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input0

Not sure why it was only 90 seconds. It was 4-5 minutes before.

Ok, but what happens after that - because this doesn't show what it waits for.

so, on your next 2 boots,
b1/ just let it boot and see if the ~90 sec remains. if not then
b2/ re-edit the boot line again (splash / quiet) and see if the ~90 sec returns.

can you give
Code: Select all
inxi -Fxzd
(available from the repos if you do not already have it.)

Filtered and found that line plus the following line.....
Code: Select all
[    1.582850] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input0
[    1.709772] clocksource: tsc: mask: 0xffffffffffffffff max_cycles: 0x18ec0c42d75, max_idle_ns: 440795212242 ns
[    1.709790] clocksource: Switched to clocksource tsc

I also found this earlier....
Code: Select all
[    2.213788] tsc: Marking TSC unstable due to clocksource watchdog
[    2.213799] TSC found unstable after boot, most likely due to broken BIOS. Use 'tsc=unstable'.

Seems like a buggy BIOS.
I kind of like this solution.....just use legacy mode.... :)

Cool. I'll try legacy mode.

Went into the BIOS and changed SATA mode from AHCI to IDE. Saved settings and booted to the desktop in about 45 seconds.

JoesCat, thank you very much! I'm a happy camper now!
