Logout to Blank Screen

Postby saptech » Oct 16th, '18, 01:34

After reinstalling Mga6 about two weeks or so (end of september), I keep having logging out issues. I'm running Plasma5 and have two users setup on the machine. I use the Switch User feature alot.

Since this new install after about 2+ days having the system on, when I log out one user, instead of returning to sddm login screen, the monitor goes blank and my only option is to hit the power button, nothing is working, I can't use the mouse/keyboard or switch to a console.

I've ran Mga since around v2 or so since it came out and never seen this behavior before, although I wasn't using KDE/Plasma. I used Mate and Openbox during those other years.

Any ideas on this?

I'm running a Dell Optiplex 760 Intel, 4gb ram, 250gb hdd. This is the same machine I've used in the past few years running Mageia. I also run a couple of other distros and not having the logout issue.

Thanks.

Sounds a bit like https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/653
So you cannot switch to any other tty? What about an ssh session at that point, or magic sysrq keys? Because you would have to have a way to at least diagnose what's going on at that point.

No, I can't get to any tty or use the magic sysrq keys. At this time I do not have a way to ssh into the system. It seems to happen after the system has been running for a few days. I guess I could try a different display manager to see if the issue continues.

Is there anything of note in the system logs (i.e. journalctl -b -1 after rebooting)?

I'm not sure but here is the end of the journalctl -b -1 log. Maybe someone can figure out what is happening if anything is in it.

Thanks.

Well, that's only the end where the display manager is exiting, you would need to provide quite a bit more, otherwise we can't see why it did that.

Re: Logout to Blank Screen

Postby saptech » Oct 20th, '18, 15:15

I would be logging out in order to reboot or shutdown the computer when it happens. As I mention, usually there are two users logged in. It happens after so many days and doesn't matter which user logs off. I will noticed during this time, the hdd light is going for a bit then the screen blanks, the monitor light will be blue (active) then turn yellow (inactive). At this point I can't do anything else but hit the power button.

Thanks for the help.

I've run into this often enough, and it's usually when running firefox or konqueror pointing to a couple of URLs.
If the URLs contain a lot of movement, like animated advertising, it tends to crash sooner. If the webpages are very static in nature, you tend to be okay for a while longer.
For example, I can point safely at the Mageia forum for a day or more.
I have a high chance of getting problems if pointing to yahoo, or other pages that have advertising scrolling repeatedly in the corners.
I suspect it's poorly written flash or other stuff leaking large amounts of memory or something.

About the only thing left that seems to work at this point is to press <CTRL><ATL>F12 or something like that, and the computer goes into shutting down, so you can reboot with a fresh screen.

It doesn't seem related to running two users, as I often run a commandline pointing to another user, but switching back-n-forth between users seems to accelerate the point when you eventually have to type <CTRL><AL>F12 to reboot out of this problem.

It seems to be plasma related since I don't recall this being an issue with Xwindows.

I usually close all open applications before logging out of the system and then from sddm I choose to reboot or while logging out user. At this point is when it seems to go through the rebooting process but get to blank screen and seems to be locked or frozen.

Again, I've been running LXDM for the past 2 days and so far no issue. I'll use it for a few more days and switch back to sddm and see how it goes.

Thanks.

On Mageia 5, I have it set to login with past settings, so when you login, it recovers programs and windows that were set earlier.
On Mageia 6, I still run KDE/plasma with the default, which is, start with fresh new desktop on login.
Shutting down apps might not be sufficient (cleaning-up), I think I ran into problems earlier trying to recall old logout settings, so I had to revert to fresh login, it doesn't fix the problem, just masks it by delaying it.
One way to avoid switching between users is to open a commandline terminal and type
su - other_user
password: password
this will allow you to run the second user (from that terminal), without having to be switching back-n-forth between user screens.

Your test using LXDM is a good comparison.

I'm on day 7 and this issue is not happening using LXDM. I must say I've ran Mageia for some years but never ran KDE/Plasma. I'll write a bug report by the weekend when I run SDDM again to see if it happens.
