[SOLVED] Backup GPT Table is corrupt

Postby Micromet » Jan 15th, '18, 16:29

I have just used the useful utility cfg2html to list an enormous amount of information relating to my desktop PC sytem. The output also created a localhost.err file. In this file there are many pointers to the following line "The backup GPT table is corrupt, but the primary appears OK, so this will be used". I have no problems with my system at present and would have been oblivious to this error if I hadn't used cfg2html.

However, having highlighted this error, I am wondering what problems I am looking at in the future, especially if the "primary" somehow fails. Online searches points to somehow the Partition Table information being different in the two tables. With a working system, I'm loath to do anything that may crash the whole system - even though when the "primary" fails - I will probably have a crash.

What is the solution? I've seen reference to gdisk operations in Ubuntu forums - but with such delicate operations I'd like to be assured by Mageia users that I'm not going to screw things up prematurely using this command especially as there are many options to the gdisk command.

Some more information: I did an fdisk -l command and got the following:
Code: Select all
Device     Boot Start        End    Sectors   Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1        2048 1953523711 1953521664 931.5G 83 Linux

The backup GPT table is corrupt, but the primary appears OK, so that will be used.

Disk /dev/sda: 55.9 GiB, 60022480896 bytes, 117231408 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: gpt
Disk identifier: 1F8ABD48-F4F0-4307-A3F3-159201F3F680

Device         Start       End   Sectors  Size Type
/dev/sda1       2048    614400    612353  299M EFI System
/dev/sda2     616448 103016447 102400000 48.8G Linux filesystem
/dev/sda3  103016448 117147647  14131200  6.8G Linux swap

So am I right in thinking the problem lies with one (or more) of the sda partitions? (as these follow the "corrupt" notice).

See e.g. https://askubuntu.com/questions/386752/ ... -gpt-table or https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... -at-reboot for more information, and be sure to have backups before messing around.

Thanks Doktor5000 - I had looked at those forum posts - just needed some verification that the solution they proposed was applicable to Mageia 5.1. Will mark this subject as closed
