[SOLVED]Skype is missing after updates

I had issues with my computer not updating because of a 32bit file. I posted that problem and got the updates working fine, however my Skype disappeared. So I thought OK I'll just switch and use the Web Skype option. Well it works for chat but I get a red circle with a line through it when I mouse over the phone and cam, so no phone calls. So I thought well I'll post on the Skype forum for help and got nothing... So then I found a new Skype for Linux. Well it didn't work either, complained about a keyring file, and the file was present. So then I seen info on using Ghetto-skype. So I installed that, it opens up then I try to log in and says my account doesn't exist.

So what are most people having success with and I will focus on that one product or version?
Thanks duder

What version did you have installed before you installed various other versions or ghetto-skype? mga5 repos contains get-skype for 4.3.0.37 which is the latest skype version available for linux at https://www.skype.com/de/download-skype/skype-for-linux so not sure what "new skype for linux" you found. You mean the alpha version from https://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/Sk ... -p/4434299 ?

Did you read through the hints (e.g. moving away your skype profile settings) in our MAQeia for Skype ?

Apart from that please show the outputs of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa|grep skype
which skype

When I last used skype, I've used get-skype from Mageia repos which worked just fine for chats and video calls.
Afterwards I've only used https://web.skype.com ocassionally and even later completely stopped using it.
Shortly after reading up on viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8276&p=50751 and after Microsoft had taken over and shut down their public Jira instance.

I recently deployed a Windows 10 virtual machine because I have a Windows 7 virtual machine that I use a fair amount, and Microsoft gave free updates for one year. I created the new VM when I realized I could do that rather than replacing the Win7 machine.

I have no need for the Win 10 VM; I just did it because the free offer was about to expire, and free is good. So, presently, I am using it as my skype machine. It knows nothing about me and has none of my personal information on it so Skype can spy as much as it wants to. Because it is genuine Windows, Skype works quite well on it.

Not sure this helps you, but this is how I do it. Also, in the couple of years since I posted that thread you referenced, many of my contacts have moved away from skype, so it is a lot less important to me now, but I still use it from time to time. May have to return to it with contacts in Ukraine and Russia; I am having trouble calling them using other technologies, but skype still works.

I had 4.3.0.37 on this machine.
I have the same version on my netbook and today I got a warning that it is out of date.

I was able to get Skype Linux Alpha to install and work sort of. It required me to create a new account, which I used my old account and it sort of works.
I have to find all my contacts again and my money for Skype calls is missing too. So I am not sure what exactly happened. Also can not seem to be able to make calls.

I am still trying to figure it out and will hopefully post its fixed soon.

If you have issues with your account or specific issues using skype, apart from running it under Mageia I suggest you take this up with skype support - good luck about that.

@jiml8: AFAIK most people in russia use viber, it's basically what they used instead of whatsapp, check https://www.viber.com/en/products/linux

Someone replied today to my posts. Apparently Skype for Linux really is a big step backwards.
So it is not setup to make phone calls to a mobile phone.

I use both whatsapp and viber. Although I can chat using either technology (and skype) anywhere, I can neither make nor receive calls from Ukraine or Russia in either whatsapp or viber...even though I can make and receive calls to/from other parts of the world with both technologies. Further, I have successfully had conversations with one contact (who lives in Ukraine and who I cannot call) on Viber when she is traveling. When she is in Spain, we can talk.

I have no explanation for this.

You suggest replacing skype with facebook video calls? To me that sounds more like being stuck between a rock and a hard place ...
But that's probably OT here.

It depends on what you wan't it works for me but it don't mean it works for you.
I have skype in my samsung s5 neo as it's more easy to install it and works than linux version.
