Network name set but not found

Postby msdobrescu » Sep 24th, '16, 13:57

Hello,

I have had installed Mageia 5 (upgraded from release to release since version 1).
I have had set Webmin and a samba server.
I have accessed them from any system (Windows, linux...) by the network name "mynas" and was enough with X2Go client too.

Today, I couldn't see it anymore, by using the network name "mynas", after installing the latest bunch of updates (probably 5.1).
Now, works using the IP address only.

How could I diagnose and fix this?

Thank you.

How do your other boxes resolve that name? Does your router resolve that name, if so by what name?

I have a router with DHCP. Other boxes do not have associated IPs with host names in hosts files.

Question was not about DHCP or not, but does your router resolve that name, if so by what name?
If it does not, then that's your problem and needs to be fixed either in your router by using static DHCP and that the router uses the expected name for your Mageia box and also resolves that for other clients
Or you need to add the Mageia box in the hosts files of your other boxes. Nothing to fix on the Mageia box there, that's a basic DNS/name resolution problem.

How could I check that?
I see it as "mynas" in the list on the router.

From any other box, check what you have in your /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/nsswitch.conf for the "hosts" stanza and then do an nslookup on the IP and the name of the Mageia box.
