Unreal Engine 4.9 On Linux [SOLVED]

Hello everyone!

I'll give you all a bit of a background...

I used to dab with a computer game company that made an open world zombie game, and have now decided to switch game engines.
We have been on the fence for awhile about what engine to go with, and have decided that a cross platform engine would be the best choice for us to get onto as many platforms as possible. So we've settled on Unreal Engine 4.

With that being said, Unreal engine is now available on linux. https://wiki.unrealengine.com/Building_On_Linux

Only issue.. I hate ubuntu, and want to use Mageia instead. Ubuntu has been nothing but a complete failure and would rather figure out everything to work on Mageia instead. If there is anyone that may have the time and patience to help me get this working under Mageia instead that would be great!

As the build is currently humming along, a few hints.

To install the minimally required packages for building, best use

Sorry for the delay. My entire workstation was ripped apart to rewire with 5.1 sound and 3 monitors. I'm currently at work and will give it a shoot when I get home off work. Only 5 hours to go.

Just a quick question, which Mageia ? 5? which desktop environment?

Yep, Mageia 5 with KDE. Although desktop environment shouldn't matter at all if you only want to compile things. But KDE is what I prefer for years :)

Just to point out those that dont know, first time you start the editor it takes a while as it compiles the shaders and what not. Also the compile itself took mine a good 10+ mins . (4790k)

Only saying so people don't think it's hung

Ok.. now that everything is hooked up and running properly, I was able to get Mageia 5 x64 installed.
Just waiting on the steps to finish.

What makefile target do you want to build?

Umm... sorry but I have no idea what you mean. I seen 'Enhancing the Makefile' in the instructions.. but the only thing that I need is the editor at this point.. I basically need the ability to open a project file from UE4 to create a binary of the game so it will run on linux.

The easiest way to package a project is opening it in the editor and then using File->Package To->Linux (assuming that you have a cross-toolchain installed in the previous step and Linux target modules are built for the editor in question - if you don't see Linux in the list, then it's likely that one of the former is not true - see above). After some time (which depends on the project in question and is rather short for sample project) you will have game assets and binaries in the directory you chose to package to.


This is basically what I need to be able to do. If this works, I'm going to be promoting this LinuxOS first and foremost to all users that buy the game upon completion. Mageia products, developers and community makes this the best distro of choice. You guys are awesome!

Umm... sorry but I have no idea what you mean. I seen 'Enhancing the Makefile' in the instructions.. but the only thing that I need is the editor at this point.. I basically need the ability to open a project file from UE4 to create a binary of the game so it will run on linux.

You can build only the separate parts, like engine or only editor, or you can build everything. If you only run "make" in the end the default target is "all" so everything will be built.
Best read again through the last part of https://wiki.unrealengine.com/Building_ ... Time_Setup and the following section.

Now you should be all set and you can build your targets using the generated Makefile. e.g:

(target names match the name of binaries).


Enhancing the Makefile
Makefile does not contain a clean method, but you can clean any target by adding ARGS=-clean to it, like this

So if you run make UE4Editor it would only build the editor.

Maybe your system is running low on memory or swapping, hence the linking might take much longer?
Otherwise you would need to ask upstream if this is expected. You could abort the build and re-run with make V=1 to see if that will show what make actually runs at that point.

After doing what exactly as you didn't post the command used?

You may need to run make clean to clean up the partial build, before you can start again.

Running "make clean" don't work Dok.

Also the correct command to make the editor is

What are your system specs nextwave?

Like dok has said low mem/HDD space will slow it down, It is a fairly heavy program, 7+ hours is an awful long time though

FYI, the UE4 folder is 18gig when compiled

I'm at work, but as soon as I'm home I'll update the info.. I know its a Intel Quad (Q6600 I think) and 8GB of ram. Geforce GT640 3GB card.

Yes! Constantly. :)

It has come to conclusion that my problem was the HDD!! I am currently loading Mageia5 (again) on an Western Digital 160GB that has passed WDLifeGuard Diag test.
I have since switched to my AMD Pheonom II X6 1055T Machine w/12GB DDR3 1333MHz, GTX650 2GB. This is my main machine that I do most of my 3D developing on.

UPDATE: All is compiling properly now since switching out HDDs!!! :) Almost completed on the compile of the editor.
