Middle mouse button doesn't work anymore

Postby henk » Feb 20th, '25, 16:32

My middle mouse button doesn't work anymore. So I can't copy/paste in a xterm. Also <control><middle button> in xterm does nothing. The scroll wheel does work correctly.
The mouse (Logitech M185) and keyboard (Logitech K270) are paired with a unifying receiver in a USB port. Solaar does see the mouse (as a M175).
I found similar problems on the web with other distros but the suggested solutions did not work for me.

Code: Select all
$ xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer                          id=2    [master pointer  (3)]
⎜   ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer                id=4    [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜   ↳ Logitech K270                             id=10   [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜   ↳ Logitech M185                             id=12   [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard                         id=3    [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard               id=5    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button                              id=6    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus                                 id=7    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button                              id=8    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button                              id=9    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Logitech K270                             id=11   [slave  keyboard (3)]

Does anybody have suggestions how to fix it?

Hi there, what particular receiver do you use?
What events do you see when you press middle mouse button, using e.g. xev or libinput debug-events ?

Also check https://pwr-solaar.github.io/Solaar/ and maybe https://github.com/pwr-Solaar/Solaar/issues/1988
I'd guess you're probably better off asking that upstream: https://github.com/pwr-Solaar/Solaar/issues

You wrote "anymore"... did it stop working after an update, or just suddenly?

Check if the switch electrically still works. I have repaired a few mice...
I.e does it work on another computer/OS?

I tried xev and libinput debugevents. Both don't show anything when I push the middle button.

The mouse has been working fine for years. It stopped working a few weeks ago. Beause I was working on two projects on a rpi5 and a rockpi4 I didn't have time to dig into the problem until now.

I tried another set of a nano-receiver, k270 and m185. They work fine. In the next weeks I will test the old set on some other computers.

There are many reports on the internet about the same issue. It is a cheap mouse model...often it is a hardware defect.
