Grub bootloader not installing anymore

Postby sitor » Sep 10th, '17, 12:41

Hello,

When I tried to install Mageia 6 on my server, everything seemd to go fine untill reboot. The I got a grub error stating that there is a problem in stage 2 (if I remember correctly, it was certainly something with 2, but not sure it was stage). I tried to reinstall mageia 5 in order to get to a working system again, and installation seemed to work just fine, but the same error occurred. In order to have at least that, I recovered forst the windows bootloader and then tried again. Now after reboot, it just does not even try to start grub anymore, it just starts windows. Trying to reinstall the grub bootloader with rescue mode seems to work, but the reboot just starts windows without starting grub again.

Any advice? I do need to get my server running again asap.

Thanks in advance
sitor

Boot into livecd and at livecd terminal,

Code: Select all
# grub
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1

Copy output, so say in following I'll use (hd0,2); {of course, use what's your output}
Code: Select all
grub> root (hd0,2)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit

You should have the existing menu.lst intact and when you reboot, it should show your old menu.lst and you can use that to boot up.
And since you have a reinstall of windows, check if menu entry for it (windows menuentry) is correct.
The only thing you need to correct is the UUID for that windows partition (if it refers to it).

ps: caveat - it's over 7 years I do not use grub-legacy. But I think that's correct.
yes, I do not use grub-legacy in Mageia either when it was default.

ps: if you want to use grub2, I'll be happy to show how.

Had a very heavy time at work which dd not allow me to spend any time on this up till now. Just tried your suggestion.

When executing
Code: Select all
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1

I get
Code: Select all
Error 15: File not found

That is consistent with the the PC booting straight into windows without showing any grub window. What next?

This means you have not installed any bootloader.
You therefore have to chroot to the Mageia partition from a livecd and
o install grub
o grub-install
o update-grub

Since I am no longer familiar with grub legacy, if you need more help (tell us please if required), someone else will need to jump in here to help out.

Cheers, good luck.

Since I did not need the ancient windows install on that machine, I installed erasing the whole HDD. Worked then without a hitch. But thanks for the help anyway.
