Indeed, this patch is needed to install and run VMware Worksation 7.1.3 under Mageia 1. Otherwise, the build of one part of the kernel module fails (two errors in '/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmmon-only/linux/driver.c'). Thank you for linking to that useful thread on OpenSuse forums. :)

Don't know the exactly bonus for using VMware Workstation.
Nowadays i use VMPlayer, which also can build virtual machines, and works out-of-the-box, no patches needed.

Why not use Virtualbox from Mageia repositories?

Doesn't VMplayer offer better DX support compared to Virtual box? I've been thinking of taking my windows partition, and just putting it on a VM as there are one or 2 not so hardcore games that won't work on WINE I know will work on a VM...*Magic The Gathering freak here*

Anyways, just curious, is there a free download of VMplayer or do you have to buy it? I'll be looking at whats in the repos to see what Virtual Box supports for DX.

For windows guests virtualbox supports 3d hardware acceleration when the guest additions are installed:
http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#guestadd-3d and also 2d video acceleration: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#guestadd-2d
DirectX 8/9 is supported, should be sufficient for Magic, no?

VMplayer is free, you just have to register with VMware before downloading:

I'm sure it will. I'll try to download both over the next week or so, just to see which is easier to setup/maintain.
