Programs remaining on when exitied

Morning
while trying to get to play some videos using mp4a ,I loaded a number of programs .
Only one played the video and sound - Banshee. But all caused a couple of minor problems
1. Banshee wouldn't exit.it would reduce itself to the task bar but continue to play but wouldn't exit until using the activities monitor and killing it twice and getting the " program not responding terminate box"
2. Kmplayer ,Vlc and Kaffeine all exited but remained running in the background - showing in conky as using around 0.9 cpu. In the activity monitor they also showed , sometimes with multiple entries ( I do not recall starting them more than once ) . These entries provided to as difficult to remove as Banshee.

I have had random examples of this behaviour in Cauldron, but nothing reproduceable.
Try running one of the offending applications from the command line and look for error messages on attempting to exit.
