How to build a custom kernel from the sources?

Postby drthrd » Jul 8th, '11, 05:49

I did some searching and fount this http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_mandriva. Got into this because I need agpgart as a module for the AMD/ATI drivers to work correctly. See see here I first compiled the kernel then read that page. That would be great if that is up to date. Would save lots of time. Is that page up to date and will still work? I think someone needs to do a updated article just for Mageia.

Why do you still believe you need that module. Where in the log does it say so?
The other poster in the linked thread says clearly he didn't need to do this and all is working.
What make you believe the fglrx driver is not working correctly without it?

I tried it and it worked. I do not see why you need to run mkinitrd. I thought the rpm would do that for you. I know the ones that are updates from your distro does not need that. I assume that step is automatically done. Is there a way to do that when you make your own kernel rpm?
