[SOLVED] 'Core' install (with no X/gui) Enabling SSH

Postby rshark » Dec 16th, '14, 17:30

Hello,

After reading a few of the stories on this forum, it look like we are following the footsteps of many others (G'bye Mandriva, Hello... Mageia)

We use very base systems, we only have a 4GB compact flash HD and 1GB Ram to run everything. These are embedded systems and have been running Mandriva 2008.1 but now the built-in Curl & SSL are out of date and not up-datable to current needs. We are just starting to build out a new version using Mageia.

Thank you Mageia for having an installer that can provide (no GUI / Window Manager) now the fun part is figuring all the configurations without the GUI tools. One of the first tasks is to get a remote SSH connection into it. Looking at the documentation for enabling SSH on Mageia (gui based)...

We've edited the sshd_config and enabled;
PasswordAuthentication yes
AllowUsers 'username'

We get no response back while tying to connect.,

I'm wondering if it's a firewall issue and then how do we manage the firewall on a 'core' installation (no gui)

If anyone knows of any documentation for the tools used in non-gui versions of Mageia 4.1 please let us know... :geek:

Thank you

rshark

For a default installation, you don't need to change sshd configuration for regular user access, only for direct root login.
Second, you could verify general function of sshd via ssh 127.0.0.1 - if it works, then you either have a network or firewall issue when connecting from remote.

For configuring the firewall with Mageia tools, drakfirewall also offers an ncurses version - simply run it and enable ssh/port 22
It offers the same functions as described in http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/4/en/content/ ... ewall.html
Apart from that, you can always configure shorewall or iptables directly and verify with iptables -L that you don't drop ssh connections.

Wow; that was painless, my apologies for the distraction and thank you for the assist... Some days the forest is hidden quite well by the trees..
ssh into localhost worked fine, drakfirewall ncurses worked great, made a check mark and all is good, it just needed the firewall opened.

Thanks tons doktor5000...
