Auto Fastest Mirror

Postby mags » Nov 22nd, '13, 12:49

I've tried searching the forum and the Wiki. There doesn't seem to be much documentation about Mageia out there.

I'm looking for a way to automatically select and use the fastest mirror when using the Software Updater.

It is possible to select individual mirrors by choice but I was interested to know if there was a tool/plugin to find the fastest mirror from a selection of different mirrors and use the quickest one.

Internet conditions are constantly changing so the fastest mirror isn't the fastest all of the time.

Thx!!

By default Mageia uses Aria (for its system RPM repository connection) to determine the fastest mirror every time.

Simply click the "Add" button and go through the prompts; it shouldn't ask you to choose a mirror. The "Add specific mirror" menu option is just there as an extra.

In the Control Center I've clicked Add. I get a prompt to download sources. I choose Yes, it starts downloading with a list of mirrors.
There's no information about specific name or location of the mirrors, just the type of repo.

Either way it's quite slow. Mageia downloads are half the speed I should be getting.

Aria itself doesn't determine mirror speed. MIRRORLIST mechanism should do it, but it doesn't always work and is not the most reliable thing.
Better have a look at http://mirrors.mageia.org/ and find a fast and reliable mirror by testing downloads from it, and then use that one.
