Help: Upgrade Mageia 2 to 3 failed!

Postby niemand » Nov 4th, '13, 11:27

"210 installation transactions failed" at "Installing" step.

Now what do I do? How do I continue?

I ran Software Updates in Mageia Center (Mageia 2) before starting the upgrade using the Mageia 3 DVD.
(I upgraded from Mageia 1 to Mageia 2 successfully just moments before.)

I am currently at the step where it asks if I have further supplementary media.

Help!

two things i would be doing right now, and one i would have done before i started.

before i started , i would have cloned the disk using whatever backup software you use.

did you, as this option to go back would be a useful alternative if things go from bad to worse.

if you have, then i would suggest that you try to upgrade again, and see if the upgrade fails again, as you have nothing to loose.

if you have not then i would consider if there is anything you need to save at this point in time and talk about that first.

if a second attempt to upgrade fails, in a similar way, see if you can still boot from the mageia install, in safe mode.

also please post your hardware, in case someone on here has experienced similar issues with graphics, motherboard etc

how much space is available in your partitions ?

df -k

Nothing that I'd really need to save. But it would be nice to not have to reinstall a couple of apps that I use on that machine. This was meant to be a test-run for another machine, which is nearly identical. I suppose this test-run tells me that I should just stay at Mageia 2 once I've upgraded to it and forget about Mageia 3.

WTF?! This is just bunk!

Phooey!

Cursing does not solve problems ...

If you want to stay with Mageia 2, as you don't provide any further details to help others troubleshoot or solve your issues, be reminded that Mageia 2 has already reached end of life.

To continue...
I did not terminate the install and just kept hitting "Next" to see what would happen. The install appears to reiterate itself. The number of failures dropped with each installation. After 4 or 5 iterations, the number of failures dropped to 164. However, this last time, I got a new screen that says:

Code: Select all
unable to import pubkey file of "Core Release"
unable to import pubkey file of "Nonfree Release"

The only choice is an "Ok" button.

So I pressed "Ok" and left it alone. When I came back several hours later, the screen was at command line interface (no GUI) telling me that it is now safe to reboot.
I rebooted, and GRUB still showed Mageia 2 at the top.
So I rebooted to my desktop. Found that the wifi was not turned on automatically. I turned on the wifi and checked the "Configure Media". The only media listed were CD-ROM Core Release and NonfreeRelease. So I tried the "Add" button. It tells me:
Code: Select all
Unable to add medium. Error reported:
Unable to add rpmdb

What to do next?

I fixed the rpmdb problem using this solution: viewtopic.php?t=3251&p=24291

you may want to change this to fixed then, :)

glad to see you got it sorted.

Im still on Mageia 2 , despite the looming end of Life, because im not that pleased with M3 at present.

However on the positive side, I just tried fedora 19 to get a perspective on my thoughts about M3.

just to say, im so pleased i stuck with mageia ..... fedora is well not a patch on mageia and after a software update

after the kdelive install left my test machine broken, due to a problem Mageia fixed in beta, ie the nouveu driver plague.

So ill hang on for M4.

The upgrade to Mageia 3 failed. Incredibly, it left my machine at Mageia 2 and still functional (so far as I can tell). Funny thing is that the default wallpaper has switched to be the one on M3. Only after I log in as my user do I get the M2 wallpaper.

Which of the methods in https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_3_Rel ... m_Mageia_2 did you choose/try? What is the output when updating the remaining packages?

I attempted to upgrade via the DVD. The instruction on that page said:
It is recommended that the online repositories be set up during the upgrade...

How?
I started the upgrade with all repos set in Mageia 2. I saw nowhere during the upgrade where it asked me to set the online repos. Also: Lebarhon told me that setting the repos is done after the install (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6294). So I'm confused with that instruction.

I couldn't tell when the packages were being updated. If you're referring to the iterations that the DVD install went through after each failure, there were so many lines of output, I could not keep track of them. I had no way to cut-and-paste anything.

My hardware: Dell D630, Intel Core 2 Duo T7500.

it askes you at the end if you want to go on line and update before you reboot.

as the text says if you do a DVD upgrade of M2 to M3 the on disk M2 may have newer M2 packages then there are on the M3 DVD you are upgrading from.

and rpm wont replace a later version of an rpm with an earlier version unless forced to do so.

At least im assuming that as thats what all the prior versions do.

that way on first boot you have all the latest m3 installed.

No, it never reached that point where it asks if I want to go online and update before I reboot.
When I came back to the machine, the install had left the GUI and was in command line mode telling me that it is now safe to reboot.
