Repeated allocation of very large block

Postby infohou » Aug 7th, '13, 18:49

Hello,

I am repeatedly getting:

dovecot: imap: Error: GC Warning: Repeated allocation of very large block may lead to memory leak and poor performance.

in the system log. Research shows this to be a Java issue. Usually an old version of Java causes this. I have removed and reinstalled Java. rpm shows:

ava-1.6.0-sun-jdbc-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0-17.1.26.mga3
java-1.6.0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
java-1.6.0-sun-fonts-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
javapackages-tools-0.12.0-2.mga3
libjavascriptcoregtk3.0_0-1.10.2-5.mga3
java-1.6.0-sun-alsa-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
libjavascriptcoregtk1.0_0-1.10.2-5.mga3
java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
timezone-java-2013c-1.mga3
libreoffice-java-common-4.0.4.2-2.mga3
java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.25-2.3.10.1.mga3

And nothing is returned if I search for jre.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Where did you get that information from, about java? What messages are there surrounding this message?

Apart from that you still have some Mageia 1 packages installed, you should definitely get rid of those,
or update them to Mageia 3.

java-1.6.0-sun-jdbc-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0-17.1.26.mga3
java-1.6.0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
java-1.6.0-sun-fonts-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree

javapackages-tools-0.12.0-2.mga3
libjavascriptcoregtk3.0_0-1.10.2-5.mga3
java-1.6.0-sun-alsa-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
libjavascriptcoregtk1.0_0-1.10.2-5.mga3
java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.26-0.2.mga1.nonfree
timezone-java-2013c-1.mga3
libreoffice-java-common-4.0.4.2-2.mga3
java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.25-2.3.10.1.mga3

So you could say that you got an old java version ....

Many posts in various Internet forums point to it being a Java issue.

Running urpmi --update --auto-select did not update the packages.

I will remove the Mageia1 packages.

Thanks for your reply,

So now the rpm database has:

Code: Select all
rootcerts-java-20121229.00-4.mga3
java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0-17.1.26.mga3
javapackages-tools-0.12.0-2.mga3
libjavascriptcoregtk3.0_0-1.10.2-5.mga3
libjavascriptcoregtk1.0_0-1.10.2-5.mga3
timezone-java-2013c-1.mga3
libreoffice-java-common-4.0.4.2-2.mga3
java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.25-2.3.10.1.mga3

But I still get:

Code: Select all
ug  7 14:36:46 myserver dovecot: imap: Error: GC Warning: Repeated allocation of very large block (appr. size 20480):
Aug  7 14:36:46 myserver dovecot: imap: Error: #011May lead to memory leak and poor performance.
Aug  7 14:36:48 myserver dovecot: imap: Error: GC Warning: Repeated allocation of very large block (appr. size 20480):
Aug  7 14:36:48 myserver dovecot: imap: Error: #011May lead to memory leak and poor performance.

Thanks,

I'd uninstall 1.7.0-openjdk and try it. You should also replace the sun java, there's a 1.6 for Mageia 3 in the non free repos (IIRC)

When trying to remove openjdk-1.7.0 I get:

Code: Select all
To satisfy dependencies, the following 6 packages will be removed (106MB):
  bouncycastle-1.46-7.mga3.noarch
(due to unsatisfied java >= 1.7)
  java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0-17.1.26.mga3.i586
(due to unsatisfied bouncycastle >= 1.46-2)
  java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.25-2.3.10.1.mga3.i586
  libreoffice-base-4.0.4.2-2.mga3.i586
   (due to missing postgresql-jdbc)
  libreoffice-java-common-4.0.4.2-2.mga3.i586
   (due to missing jre)
  postgresql-jdbc-9.2.1002-3.mga3.noarch
   (due to missing java)

So I'm thinking that might not be a good idea. Or should I do --nodeps as we used to do years ago?

Thanks,
Robert

That's a short list, I'd note the packages, remove them, add the java-sun packages then reinstall these. nodeps might work too, but I'm always leery of that route, I use it when the dependency list is huge, like 15+ packages.
