Mageia 2, Gnome 3.
I want to add an additional language to "Region and Language". How?
This is so that any one user can set his desktop environment to display in the language of his choice.
Currently, "Region and Language" shows: "British English", "Chinese (simplified)", and "English".
I added the package "locales-de", but "German" does not get listed.

Do you look at the Gnome-settings or in the MCC?
Regarding the Gnome settings I haven't any clue since I never used Gnome. But in the MCC System --> 'Manage localization for your System' (or localedrake in the shell) I found 'German' to select after I installed 'locales-de'. I'm not sure, but if you want also select 'Gemany' when choosing the country you have to search at 'Other Countries' to find it.

I was looking at the list in the Language tab for Gnome "System Settings > Region and Language". "Chinese (traditional)" is now available for adding to the list after doing what you suggested in MCC. I tried the same with German, but it is still not available for adding to the list. What's going on with this?

From which medium did you install? You may be affected by https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Err ... .2Flocales
Also what exactly did you try? And what do you want to achieve exactly? Presumably you want to change the localisation for whole Gnome to german, is that correct?

Please also show the output of

I'm trying to set up the desktop environment for one user to be in Traditional Chinese and for another user in German.
I do not recall having the install remove unused drivers and locales.
In Gnome 3, I tried what I described above:

The Chinese seems to display ok, although it does not display for menu items in the desktop environment. It does not display in the filer for "Desktop", "Downloads", "Documents" folder names.

For KDE, the Chinese does not display at all. In fact, it appears that whatever settings I make in KDE, they do not work. I have to switch back to Gnome to make the settings and come back to KDE to see some effect. Even then, only monospace fonts in English get displayed; no Chinese characters at all.

I have another system that was migrated from Mandriva 2010 to Mageia 2 last year, and Chinese display fine in KDE. In Gnome, Chinese is also displayed in the the filer for "Desktop", "Downloads", "Documents" folder names.

German does not display at all for either Gnome or KDE. (I did not try this in the other system that was migrated from Mandriva.)

At least for KDE the package kde-l10n-de should be installed - If this is also needed for Gnome I don't know...

Basically systemsettings is not the right tool for this, first you need to install the relevant packages, as also mentioned by Latte.
localedrake (which is the command for the tool in Mageia Control Center to manage localisation) is what you need.

I did install the package kde-l10n-zh_TW via MCC, but still KDE does not display any characters.

The German user is not using KDE.
