Kernel 3.4.24 : CPU fan doesn't change, temperature rise

Postby pmithrandir » Jan 24th, '13, 09:08

Hello,

I filled a bug long time ago about this issue, but so far, no one was able to resolv it.
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1741

The problem is that on my laptop, the CPU fan works, but the fan speed doesn't change. So when I got some heavy load on my computer, with CPU at 100% for few minutes, the temperature can rise to 102°C very easily.

Before the new kernel, I was able to "resolv" this bug by putting my laptop in sleep mode, and to "awake" it. The fan speed was then changed automatically.

But with the new kernel that was updated few days ago, 3.4.24, I get the same problem, and the sleep mode trick doesn't works anymore.

If any of you have any idea on how to resolve this issue, I would be glad to him / her, and I think the bug squad will be more than happy to close for good this bugs open since years...

Best regards,
Pierre

BTW, I'm using the desktop version of the kernel, but I see that there is also these 2 :
kernel-tmb-laptop-3.4.24-2.mga2
kernel-netbook-3.4.24-3.mga2

Are they not better for laptop ? I'm not playing, so I'm not after CPU power if I can save some battery life.(and maybe got better laptop function working)

Hi Pierre,
Just to say you're not alone.... I also had the same pb of temperature rising that bad.
As I remember, I saw on the net, that it was not very well assumed in Linux, specially for laptops.
Not kidding, I had to put it IN the freege for minutes.
Eventually, I discover a graphic card driver pb....a new version fixed that over heat pb.
But no issue for fan speed or regulation.
I precise, I'm on Asus EeePC 1201NL.

...and I agree with you about the question for laptop/netbook choice.. which one to use for a EeePC since the Desktop one seems to work.
Please Mageia Gurus, say it for us !
To many choices kill the choice ;-)
