Good archive managers for Mageia 2 ?

Postby onikage » Nov 27th, '12, 01:42

Hello,
I'm actually extremely disappointed with Xarchiver and squeeze. I've had multiple issues with both, lack of support for basic packages like .rar. Funny errors, crashes and whatnot.
That's extremely embarassing for a linux user, but I actually had to install WinRar via Wine in order to finally deal successfully with a 4gb .rar archive. WinRar did it flawlessly and it's such a small program, doesn't have much requirements. I don't need to install stuff like "unrar" and so on.
How is it possible that both archive managers that are provided with Mageia 2 suck so bad. I mean I've never seen anything like it before.

Is there any good xfce-compatible archiver that I can use and not have to resort to windows programs ? Thanks.

Have you tied to buy RAR for Linux? I don't think RAR-archiving is supported for free in Linux! Contact rarlab on their site..

On the other hand, some distros, Ubuntu and maybe Arch Linux, provide the rar package..try adapting it to Mageia if it's so urgent..

Googling you might be able to download source rpm from DAG for Fedora I guess. Instructions provided.

xarchiver and squeeze do support .rar after a package called "unrar" is installed, it just doesn't work well at all, The managers are clumsy take time to load larger archives and so on.

only unraring is supported I guess. Anyway, try right-click on the folder and rar it from the context menu to make sure! Unraring is supported of course as it is free.

Once again refer to DAG for Fedora RPM RAR package or some other distro. The best way if you really need it is buy it from rarlab :)

RAR is free for linux, get it here: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm (look at the top, RAR 4.20 for Linux)
No need for a package, just extract it and put the rar binary somehwere in your PATH, f.ex. in /usr/bin and make it executable (chmod +x)

But unrar works fine for extracting, using it here and never had a problem with extracting, not even with >25GB multi-volume archives (since at least five years).
Some archive managers just have problems with password-protected or multi-volume archives, f.ex. ark has a pretty bad history on that part.

For archive managers, other popular ones are ark and file-roller
