mageia 2 and the Dell R820

Hi,

I am IT manager at Metagenopolis unit at INRA Jouy en Josas. We manage a lot of serveurs for computing, hybride computing and for storage. We use windows hpc edition, one centos, one fedora, one Mandriva (will disepeared), and six computing servers with the mageia 2 (one Dell C6220), and one hp SL390.
I had choice Mageia, because I have used the mandriva during years and years and I am happy with it. I choose to follow the fork Mageia, because of the large community and because of the mandriva administration spirit folowing.

No the project is starting and we will scale up in a factor of five or seven all the infrastructure : IT, and Biology.

So the choice we do need to be perfect. Having Six big computing serveurs with Mageia is already a good choice and they work well. Infortunetly the Dell R820 don't boot with the mageia live. The process is very long and after aving the five "dot" over cauldron it stop. I have tested with the fedora 17 live and I get plainty of soft lock errors. I have tried with the complet mageia dvd installation, the kernel is loaded the first usb and sas pilotes are detected and then the process stop because the installation don't find the cdrom. It's the same with the mageia 3b3.

The only distribution that works is the last centos.

So this is the time to evaluate the choice. I prefere to have an homogenious installation of course. And the centos is not uptodate with the kernel and other tools.

The Dell R820 is a big computer with four xeon many cores and 768Go of memory, 2 x 10Gb ethernet, 4 x 1Gb ethernet, for ssd and twelve sas of 1To each.

I any of you have an id that cause all these problems in the mageia booting, that will be great and of course the computers could be free accessed in order to debug.

I thank you in advance.

Best report a bug report, and wait for feedback from our kernel maintainer. https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly
You could also google around for common problems, like with storage controllers and things like that for your model and recent linux distros in general ...
