Mageia no longer boots after updating kernel

Postby roadrunner » Sep 2nd, '12, 16:08

Updated the kernel from kernel-server-3.3.6-2.mga2 to kernel-server-3.3.8-2.mga2 today and the new kernel won't boot.
The boot process hangs at "Started LSB: Network monitoring daemon ......... [ OK ]".

The previous kernel still boots without problems, ideas anybody?

Roadrunner,

Have you tried with the boot-options: acpi=off noapic nolapic ?
If this works it means that you have to shut down manually your PC.

I have the same problem but the boot process hangs at "Started bluetooth manager ......... [ OK ]"
and I can't go back to the old kernel 3.3.6 : the boot process early stops on a black screen.

I have a new computer with Gigabyte GA-A75-S2V (sound realtek acl889), AMD-A6-3650, 4 Go DDR3.

I first made a WEB install of Mageia 2 (15th september) and it worked fine with kernel 3.3.8.

Then I added a 2d boot CAElinux (engeneering & mathematical distro based on ubuntu 10.04 LTS)
but I could never have a correct sound (8 millions entries in google for "ubuntu" + "sound" + "problem" !!!)
the challenge is to find the good idea among very bad ones and I broke every things + the grub.

So I used a winXP CD (sorry) to format my HDD and rebuild the MBR, and back to mageia with a CDlive instead of WEB install.

The kernel 3.3.6 works fine.
Then I update 126 packages including the kernel 3.3.8.
And then the crash.

I know that the kernel 3.3.8 can work on my computer with a WEB install but not after a CDlive install.
I suppose the problem is the updating procedure ?

you could try to follow this procedure,
but it seems that doesn't solve all the faults
