Booting problem - System doesn´t start - GUI problem

This forum is dedicated to advanced help and support :

Ask here your questions about advanced usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about network and automated installs, complex server configurations, kernel tuning, creating your own Mageia mirrors, and all tasks likely to be touchy even for skilled users.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply and sorry about the delay in my reply.

tom_ wrote:I can see listed the boot filesystem but not the /home filesystem (which is in a different filesystem).

Later, it seems you have problem in accessing to /home,

so X cannot start as user (cannot write the /home/user/.auth file)
but X can start from user root, as user root has the home in /root and you have it

in your picture i can see the home of the root user, which is /root.

I doubt you have /home/user folder

No, I don´t.

Code: Select all
[root@localhost Documents]# ll /home
total 0
[root@localhost Documents]#

And when booting, it goes until the 5 dots appear above the cauldron(?) on the screen image in front of the word mageia.

This is my /var/log/messages.
In the third line during a boot, there is an error line:
Aug 11 18:55:37 localhost systemd[1]: Failed to load environment files: No such file or directory
Aug 11 18:55:37 localhost systemd[1]: lm_sensors.service failed to run 'start' task: No such file or directory

So this too is ćos of the /home directory not being there?

But there has been no change in /etc/fstab file.
Code: Select all
[root@localhost Documents]# ll /etc/fstab*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 376 Aug  9 08:55 /etc/fstab
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 335 Jul 21 20:49 /etc/fstab~

Both of these fstab file entries are in above posts.posting.php?mode=reply&f=8&t=3228#pr24185 & posting.php?mode=reply&f=8&t=3228#pr24181

you could try to see if systemd can tell you more

in this page there a a few hints on how to debug it

Sorry I forgot to post the /var/log/messages in the previous post.

Attached File:
---------------------
var_log_messages_12_6.txt
Attached File:
---------------------
/var/log/messages from today´s boot.

I think from 6:21 it´s my linux-fb booting messages and before that is my linux-failsafe boot messages ?
(133.38 KiB) Downloaded 199 times

Also when I try startx without remounting in root, I get the same error as user
Code: Select all
auth:  error in locking authority file /home/root/.serverauth.----
xauth:  error in locking authority file /home/root/.Xauthority

you could also try to raise the LVM log level from its configuration file

http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Clust ... _file.html

it seems you have a very low level.

Sorry but I'm not not an expert of LVM nor of systemd,
so my help in this part is really poor

Thanks!
Tried it out but didn't see any new errors.

And thank you very much for reading my thread and helping out. :)

I think it is better to restart the analisys from the begin:

boot your machine adding these parameters to the kernel command line:

Code: Select all
systemd.log_level=debug systemd.log_target=kmsg log_buf_len=1M

when you have the console with the error messages, type

Code: Select all
dmesg > dmesg.txt

then post dmesg.txt here

Thanks :-)

I wasn't sure where to add the parameters.

I pressed Esc and got the Text Grub screen with fb,non-fb,failsafe options and I selected linux-nonfb and pressed 'e-edit' and got the menu.lst entry . I pressed 'e' again and got the grub command line with the end of this entry. I typed the systemd.log... and got back to the modified entry but after that I just got a black screen with :
Code: Select all
    Booting command-list
Kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux-nonfb root=/dev/vg-uno/root resume=dev/vg-uno/swap
  [Linux-bzImage, setup=0X4200, size=0X2024d0] initrd (hd(0,0)/initrd.img systemd.log_devel=debug systemd.log_target=kmsg log_buf_len=1M
and a blinking cursor at the next line and nothing else happening.

So I tried adding it directly in the Grub GUI bootscreen where the line at the bottom of the screen can be edited.
Attaching the dmesg after linux-fb and failsafe.
Code: Select all
Boot Options
BOOT_IMAGE=linux-fb root=/dev/vg-uno/root resume=/dev/vg-uno/swap systemd.log_level=debug systemd.log_target=kmsg log_buf_len=1M
Code: Select all
login: <user1> <pwd>
su - <pwd>
mount -o remount,rw /
dmesg > Documents/boot_prob/dmesg_18_8-fb.txt

dmesg_18_8-fb.txt.7z
(37.25 KiB) Downloaded 116 times

Code: Select all
Boot Options
BOOT_IMAGE=failsafe root=/dev/vg-uno/root failsafe systemd.log_level=debug systemd.log_target=kmsg log_buf_len=1M
Code: Select all
mount -o remount,rw /
dmesg > Documents/boot_prob/dmesg_18_8.7-failsafe.tx.txt

dmesg_18_8.7-failsafe.txt.7z
(29.4 KiB) Downloaded 105 times

Since I have ro filesystem, the attached text files are dmesg after su - and rw remount but before sysctl default and startx.

I have checked only dmesg_18:

Code: Select all
[   36.657722] dracut: lvchange -- activation/volume_list configuration setting not defined: Checking only host tags for vg-uno/root

this could means that in your /etc/lvm/lvn.conf the activation volume_list directive is not valid

from man lvm.conf:
Code: Select all
activation - Settings affecting device-mapper activation
volume_list - This acts as a filter through which all requests to activate a logical volume on this machine are passed. A logical volume is only activated if it matches an item in the list. Tags must be preceded by @ and are checked against all tags defined in the logical volume and volume group metadata for a match. @* is short-hand to check every tag set on the host machine (see tags above). Logical volume and volume groups can also be included in the list by name e.g. vg00, vg00/lvol1.

please post the file (also check if there is an older version on your machine)

here there is a nice LVM troubleshooting guide, you could try it
http://www.centos.org/docs/4/4.5/SAC_Cl ... diags.html

Hi,
Thanks 4 reading it.

Here is my lvm.conf file:

I don't have a older lvm.conf file. The two changes I made are for logging.

Not sure for which command I have to use -vvvv. The commands such as lvchange that I see in dmesg?

can you try with checks = 1?

Code: Select all
activation {
    # Set to 1 to perform internal checks on the operations issued to
    # libdevmapper.  Useful for debugging problems with activation.
    # Some of the checks may be expensive, so it's best to use this
    # only when there seems to be a problem.
    checks = 0

Hi,
ok, I set these in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf: activation {

and then, booting with linux-fb and syslog.d debug

can't found the boot with checks enabled in these files,
there is the activation but can't see anything more

Code: Select all
$ grep -n  "LVM activation checks" *

dmesg_checks_udev_sysd.log.txt:1163:[   19.742407] dracut: -- LVM activation checks disabled

lvm.log_activ-checks_udev_sysd.log:13:../../lib/misc/lvm-globals.c:148  -- LVM activation checks disabled
lvm.log_activ-checks_udev_sysd.log:97:../../lib/misc/lvm-globals.c:148  -- LVM activation checks disabled

Hi,
The last one in that grep output lines is 'enabled' :)
I have set the lvm.conf log in 'append' mode.

After booting fails, and it says / is read-only, I have been remounting the root rw, right?.

Code: Select all
#mount -o remount,rw /

So, I tried remount /home too.
Code: Select all
#mount -o remount,rw /home

But I got an error msg saying /home was neither in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

So I tried:

Code: Select all
#mount /dev/vg-uno/home /home

Now I am able to login as user in GUI :)
Though my desktop screen settings(~/.kde ?) seems to have become default. :(
I don't have my panels, shortcuts or keyboard shortcuts :(((

Ofcourse, the boot problem still remains. :(

I had a backup of ~/.kde4 and I now have my old desktop screen with all my panels, shortcuts and keyboard shortcuts working. :)

Only the boot problem now. :D

Can you see if this is exactly your problem?
