intel hardware accelaration

Postby iceman » Jul 24th, '12, 20:27

Hi everyone.
I just installed mageia 2 and i had no problem so far with my Lenovo sl300 (Intel GMA x4500mhd),but i have a few questions.

What should i do to have a proper hardware accelaration for h264 (x4500mhd supports it) and how can i check it?

What repos should i have enabled?

What should i do for my ssd and the trim support?when i was running ubuntu distros i added "noatime, nodiratime, discard" and "tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0" to my fstab, should i do the same for Mageia 2 too?

cheers :)

You may want to check http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_GMA_4500MHD
It may support hardware-accelerated h264 decoding, but the linux driver doesn't support it until pretty recent releases: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/h264.html
Looking at the version of the required libraries, Mageia 2 already sports those. Have you tried any of the mentioned media players there? E.g. try VLC that should work out of the box, but i'd suggest to use the tainted version of it. So enable the tainted -release and -updates repos and install vlc or do an update via urpmi to get the tainted version.

Did I get it right that hardware support of h264 on Intel 4500 is out of question for Mageia1? (The kernel and libraries are quite outdated...)

Sorry, i don't know and i'm not quite sure, because some of the relevant libraries contained backported patches from newer releases.
But keep in mind that Mageia 1 is near its end of support, only 4 months to go from now on.

Obviously, there is no (and won't be) any h264 hardware decoding support in Mageia1, as far as I can see... Both because of the old drivers/kernel and outdated versions of VLC/Mplayer/etc, that do not provide this feature.
Well, hope that when I install Mageia3 everything will already be there :)

But anyway, thanks.

Are you talking only about Intel graphics here, or in general terms?

Sorry, had to mention that of course - only about Intel graphics and, namely, about the 4th series of chipsets (pre-iX).
