Linux Kernel 3.4

Postby ethancello » Jun 16th, '12, 00:27

1) Is there a way to install Linux Kernel 3.4 on Mageia 2?
2) Is there a good way to ensure my graphics card (NVIDIA 425M) will work once Kernel 3.4 has been installed?
3) Iff the answers to 1 and 2 are yes, could I get a little help on the steps required?

Danke schoen

if there is no rpm in the tree or at caldraun.... u need to build it by ur own from source
what will work is when u have a running 3.3.x Kernel, do a "make oldconfig" and use this to build the new 3.4 Kernel, with luck it works at the first try without errors ;)

Oh by the way, when u got it working and u think this kernel is good, dont delete the source and do a make rpm so we all can try ;)
And yes, when u have the kernel source ur Nvidia Driver will be build against the new Kernel at next boot, with luck also without any Error ^^

Gruß ;)

yep, give it a try and let us pls know what u think abt this kernel. let me ask, where are u using this kernel on? AMD? Intel? Intel Atom?
dont forget to install as well kernel source and devel when u want ur nvidia driver to get working.

NVIDIA GEFORCE 425M
intel quad-core i7 (I think sandy bridge) <- the reason I want kernel 3.4

I already tried this on Ubuntu upgrading from kernel 3.2 to 3.4.0 and lost complete support for my graphics card. I got so frustrated that I got rid of Ubuntu. And thus the source of my worries.

So just to double/triple check myself the packages to install

ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/distrib ... x86_64.rpm
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/distrib ... x86_64.rpm
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/distrib ... noarch.rpm

I'm not sure about the last package.

Does this look correct?

You are correct, the last one is not the right choice. If you really need the sources for that kernel, you want ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/distrib ... noarch.rpm

But in any case i think you need ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/distrib ... x86_64.rpm
So if you only want to add nvidia drivers or Virtualbox or something like that, you need the kernel itself, the corresponding -devel package and the userspace headers. The complete kernel source is only needed if you want to recompile the kernel, or for some rare cornercases.
Although i'm not 100proof about the -userspace-headers as this package just got split out during the development between Mageia 1 and Mageia 2.

indeed, read above, 3 rpm´s in need and it works, maybe you will need to reinstall ur gfx-card driver, but usually this should work without any problems at the reboot and it will be rebuild against the new kernel.
by the way, for all nvidia guys, give the new 3.x nvidia revision a try, it works pretty fine now ;)

Can you please read the information some posts above? Also, in the other thread where you asked this, you were told that cauldron is already at 3.5.
And please keep in mind that crossposting is disregarded ...

@doktor5000 i have installed Mageia 2 with kernel 3.3 and i don't want to upgrade to Cauldron all my system but only the kernel, so is not the same thing with other my post.
My link from above is from Rosa Linux and i want to know if installation affect my system because is other distribution and i don't want after installation and reboot my CPU to burn , so i ask the community is better or not to install this .rpm!
Do you mind please be more careful on topic and discussion. This is a topic only about kernel 3.4 not Cauldron.

More careful, eh? So i better stay away from this thread ...
If you didn't read the original post in this thread, and the solution given, i can't help you. Even less with that attitude you showed.

So no, kernel 3.4 is not available as official package for Mageia 2, but you may use the cauldron packages.
I'd better stay away from using Rosa packages on Mageia, as this is a completely different distribution, technically.

EOT for me.

Thank you. This is the kind of response and approach which I appreciate.
