Mageia-2 bogged down

Postby DonaldFR » Jul 25th, '12, 20:16

My partner upgraded her Sony quad core i5 laptop to the last test version of Mageia-2. It apparently self-updated to the released Mageia-2. At first, the OS worked fine, then it slowed down to a crawl - you click something and wait many seconds for a response. The behaviour is not consistent: frequently it will speed up to normal for, say, thirty seconds, than slow down for the next thirty seconds.

We decided the easiest solution was to erase the hard drive and re-install with with a fresh download. I downloaded, did a checksum, and installed. We got the same behaviour, this time right out of the box.

I'm at a complete loss. I'm not in front of the machine (a late model Sony laptop purchased within the past few months with an i5 quad-core chip) but I'm hoping people can give me ideas to try when I get home tonight.

The only odd behavour I've noticed beyond the slow response is that each core on the chip appears to be working at a dramatically different rate, e.g., one core will be doing all the work while the other three are close to idle. (The dual cores on my HP appear to run pretty miuch in synch.)

Any ideas?

Thhanks!

Can you please give some more details, what you installed exactly? Dualarch, Free DVD or which LiveCD? And did you keep the old /home or did you create it from scratch again?
And did you already have a look at the Errata? https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_2_Errata

I was running Mageia 2 which was updated from Beta. Seemed to run very well. At some point the computer locked up and refused to even shut down. I was traveling at that time and do not know if it ran an automatic update or not. I persisted and eventually got it to at least shut down (told it to shut down when lid closed, which worked, but it "forgot" that setting when it rebooted When I got home we downloaded Mageia 2 to a DVD, checksumed it. The first load I did as a re-load and kept all my files. Install seemed slow, once I was done the problems remained. VERY slow response time. Click, wait, wait, wait, wait, eventually screen comes up. Type and often this extremely fast machine couldn't even get the type on the screen, it would hesitate, hesitate, hesitate and then put up a line or two of typing. The secod time I wiped the disk and loaded fresh from the DVD. Same problems. Went in and began turning window dodads off. When I got to the Widget setting I changed widget sets and that helped a good deal, but didn't really "fix" the problem. Did speed things up a lot --part--- of the time.

During the load there was one question I didn't understand. It asked if I wanted to configure all four "heads" seperately. That was the default, so I took the default.

sounds like a misconfigured Xserver. Has this machine an integrated graphics-chip and a discrete graphics-card?
for windows problems reboot; for linux problems be root
