Mageia turns my computer on itself after shutdown

Postby Tedel » Jun 2nd, '12, 06:32

Hello,

I am having a problem with my computer. Since the last update, which included the following packages...

drakconf-icons-12.30-1.mga2.noarch
mageia-theme-common-1.5.0.28-4.mga2.noarch
drakconf-12.30-1.mga2.noarch
mageia-theme-kde-background-1.5.0.28-4.mga2.noarch
mageia-release-common-2-4.mga2.x86_64
mageia-theme-Default-screensaver-1.5.0.28-4.mga2.noarch
mageia-release-Default-2-4.mga2.x86_64
mageia-theme-Default-1.5.0.28-4.mga2.noarch
Default-kde4-config-2-0.20120531.1.mga2.noarch
mageia-kde4-config-common-2-0.20120531.1.mga2.noarch
mageia-gfxboot-theme-4.4.5.7-2.mga2.x86_64

...my computer turns on itself once I order it to shut down.

To help you understand this in full. It doesn't matter whether I use KDE's "leave" menu, telinit 0, shutdown now, or poweroff; the computer logs out, go through the normal shutting down process, and then it powers off (both lights in the computer turn off). After one second, the computer turns on again by itself.

This did not happen when I installed Mageia from the LiveCD, so I really suspect an update is causing it.

Any ideas, please?

I would try with Live CD to exclude hardware.

I tried a Fedora 17 LiveCDs already. No problem when turning off the computer.

Also, I made a mistake yesterday. telinit 0 worked.

So far those updates should not have anything to do with the problem you're describing, as those were only updates replacing some artwork related to http://blog.mageia.org/en/2012/05/31/ba ... d-credits/ and they didn't cahnge anything functional.

Please, some more details. Do you have a laptop or a desktop computer, what model and which peripherals are attached to it.

Some more details:

CPU: AMD Athlon X2 2.8
GPU: Nvidia 8600 512 MB
RAM: 2 GB
Hard disk: 250 GB ~ 3 partitions: swap 2 GB ~ / 20 GB ~ /home the rest of the disk
I formatted the whole dis to install Mageia 2, so there aren't previous folders from other distros.

Internet connection through a USB modem.
Microphone.
USB mouse
Spanish keyboard - 101 keys
20" screen using DVI connection
Genius F350 pen tablet

Ocassionally, I plug in a joystick, my Kingston USB pendrive

Besides this strange "auto turn-on" issue, everything works perfectly.

EDIT:

I am also experiencing an issue on the display. Black dots appear on the top left corner now and then. It is not dirt on the area. Screenshot attached.

those dots are another issue

Yes, they are a separate issue: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2523

For your problem, please try again after unplugging all peripherals, and leave only the monitor attached. Does the box still reboot?
Also, what mainboard are you using?

Aha! You were right. If I unplug the USB modem, the system powers off correctly. I double-checked. That's the cause.

Now I need to ask something. This shouldn't be a normal behaviour. Do I need to submit a bug report or something?

So far, unplugging the USB modem before shutting down will do for me.

Thanks you for the help.

That's not related to Mageia, as when the computer is offline, only BIOS controls the behaviour. So you need to have a look inside there for power management settings, and check if there are settings like power-on-keyboard, and maybe power-on-usb or something like that. If you would have answered my question what mainboard you're using, i could have told you where to find that, maybe ...

I am afraid I couldn't find the model, but the motherboard is a GigaByte. Is there any way to know this through software?

As root, post the output of
Code: Select all
dmidecode
but please use code-tags as explained here: ftp://ftp.mandrivauser.de/rpm/rpm/extra ... e_tags.ogv
