Mageia 2 -updaye installed KDE rather than GNOME

Postby Fred01 » May 28th, '12, 00:55

Had another laptop - with Magei 1 and Gnome installed -- just today update the new distribution of Mageia 2 -- on line install.... all went well
However when rebooting after install it seems to have installed KDE rather than GNOME ...?

Can this be changed back somehow to Hnome as desktion GIU environment -- must be personal but yhis doen't feel good to me and
here in KDE can't even find how to open my personal folders (places) -- have no clue how & where to find and be able to browse my folders....

especially concerning this last also - any one any sugestion on how to find your own folders under KDE...

hope I've not to get a whole new install or so ... /// so could try and live with this new KDE desktop, but would really like to find and have
access to my home directory and folders and such again...

Thanks

Just open dolphin or any other file manager and go to your /home/username or called Personal Folder under KDE. I don't understand that question, to be honest :?

For the GNOME part, you can just log off and select GNOME as session, does that work? If not, please try to install task-gnome

well found that under KDE there's in the taskbar something like an application launcer.
clicking it sho the recently used applications and the applications under under All Applications.

In the All Applicationd - do have 'tools' -->> 'system tools' and under 'system tools' there's an icon
that shws a folder with a little hose and the name 'Home' -- when moving the mouse over it shows
the description 'Personal Files'.

However when clicking nothing happens at all.

Also such a folder sign is in the taskbar - but when clickin it, says
'unable to run the command specified, The file or folder File://does not exist.

So in otherwods I can't get to my Home Folders --- but do know they are all there, as when I open
the tool to amend the background -- I can navigate to all folders and they do have contents.

Seems just that I have no way to open the Home Folders / or Personal Folders .......

So just need to know / understand how to get to my files in the folders.....

--------------------------

About the other issue -- re. KDE versus Gnome -- is also somehow strange, as I'd under Mageia 1 - Gnome GUI (alway use Gnome)
now after installation of Mageia 2 and reboot - all of sudden have KDE...
Have checked in the Mageia Control Center -- and there at BOOT is shown to start Gnome at boot.... ??

Thanks
Fred

So if dolphin (which is what is called when clicking at those icons, as it's the default file manager for KDE) or konqueror don't work, you can still use any other file manager like nautilus or mc, or a terminal to get to your files. Can you try any of those?

For the GNOME issue, did you try to install/reinstall task-gnome as i suggested?

ok, found that running Nautilusas a command made me find back my files but noy open them.
downloaded and installed dolphin and that did the trick .
now when clickinh the file icpn, the home directory window comes up and I can from then get
into the files...

Still strange is the fact about using KDE where the bot manager and also display manager
indicates I'm using GNOME / but yet all is KDE sinds the install of Mageia 2 ..........
have tried with activating the checkbow in the dispalay manager - as it showed KDE as actif X manager,
but also that didn't make a change on reboot....

concerning the install/reinstall task-gnome -- haven't tried that one yet --- is it a program/application
to be found under the software manager in the control center..?

No, essentially by itself it's an empty package, which pulls in all required packages for a complete GNOME desktop, and yes it can be found in the software manager.
But make sure to set the filter from "Programs with a GUI" to "all packages" so you see all packages. That's why i proposed to try to install or reinstall that first (meaning if it's already install, remove it and reinstall it afterwards)

Ok - have this weekend tried several times with removing and subsequently reinstall task-gnome - but no success...
after rebooting system keeps coming back to KDE
also tried by changing the graphical environment, by changing from GNOME as choice to KDE and back again to GNOME,
the system asks if it should restart the graphical environment, but does not change anything effectively as it remains on KDE.
So even when the boot says to start GNOME and the graphical environment is set to GNOME and having the Gnome-task manager
removed and reinstalled... the system stays on KDE.....

Unless your using Auto login you should see an icon that looks like a paper and pencil in the login screen.
Click on it, choose gnome and login.

Thanks Ken,
Will try out when at home....
Question: should it not be possible to also have Gnome up when using auto login / hence skip the user login portion....

Of course.
In drakboot just choose the user and the desktop, Kde4, Gnome or other.

Have done this;
used Drakecontrol to set auto login off -- rebooted, but no paper and pencil in the user login screen.
checked back in Drakecontrol and noticed both boot and monitor control to be set now on KDE4
have set both back to Gnome ans monitor manager restarted, but no all came back again in KDE4
environment -- so checjecked both boot and monitor control again, which both still do show Gnome.... ?????
Seems I'm just not getting into Gnome environment at all in no way....

Which login manager are you using?
Go to (MCC > Boot > Setup display Manager) to see.

KDM appears to be the only one that has a way of changing between Desktop environments.

Fred;
I tried those setting in Mageia 1 and found the same as you, they're not honoured and the system boots to KDE4.

If I choose KDM as the display manager I can use the pencil/paper icon to choose Gnome and the Gnome desktop then loads.

Exactly...
Only I was on Mageia 1 -- and on Gnome (for years) -- only after upgrading to distro version 2 and after rebooting KDE4 came up ans stayed....
point is that I've also tried to take auto load of with KDE4 as choice - but seems to miss the pencil/paper icon....
when home will try again // one never knows....
But for me thus far, it's a mystery....
