[SOLVED] Mageia 2 Beta Initial Testing Failing

Postby linuxero » Mar 17th, '12, 23:09

Hi guys;

I have just finished installing Mageia 2 Beta 2 to test it. The problem is that it does not boot into GUI. I am attaching a snapshot of the initial boot process and in http://mtailounie.net/mga.3gp you can see a 1 minute booting of my installation.

I can use CTRL+ALT+F1-12 to switch TTY's but no GUI.

I chose bothe KDE and Gnome during the installation process. Here are few stuff that might help (From within Mandriva 2011):

Code: Select all

Please linuxero choose some more meaningful topic-title.
At least something more to the point, which will make your topic stronger.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

At the first (GRUB) boot screen, press the F3 key, and add the text
Code: Select all
radeon.modeset=0

in the text box for kernel options (make sure you add this after any existing options, and note that the text can scroll off the end of the box).

Does this help?

Yes thank you. Now I can boot but still the GUI boot disappears and then only the little balls appear within the boot messages.

I tried to configure my WIFI connection through MCC but it was impossible since the programme exits every time I click on wireless connection! So i did the configuration through the network center. The connection wouldn't work. I compared the configuration files to those of Mandriva and then copied Mandriva's into /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/wireless.d. I also copied the configuration of /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf and rebooted. Now I have Internet. In /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf there was an extra parameter which read auth_alg=OPEN. I removed it and all is ok.

The screen resolution is low, but I think it's a matter of configuring the VGA Card.

That's it for now..thanks again :P

If my suggestion helped, it's most likely you've found https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1471.

If you now enable the nonfree repository and install the radeon-firmware package, you should then be able to boot without the workaround, and hopefully have a fully functional display.

Alternatively, you can choose to use the proprietary fglrx driver, which doesn't need the radeon-firmware package installed.

That's what I did. The only problem was that MCC wouldn't wokr in KDE to add repositories or configure anything else. I didn't try text mode Drake Conf. I rather logged in using Gnome where I could add repos, configure the card and now my KDE works tto.

There are few problems still but I am opening new threads upon confirmation ;)

thanks again
