Sometimes do not wake up when i get back

Postby morgano » Dec 15th, '11, 13:59

A couple times per week i find when i get back to the computer after long time it do not respond.
It have past so long time that screen have turned off, after screen saver.

Mostly i just move mouse or keyboard and it promts my password etc.
-Most times it is all OK.

Just occasionally it do not do anything, not even enable video output.
(To be precise: my monitor do not wake, and if i start it manually, it soon shuts off again)

I also tried to in blind Ctrl-Alt-F1, root <enter>, password <enter>, reboot <enter> but no response.

Only response i have observed is that if i plug in a USB drive the led on it flickers like normal when the system detects it.

Only way i have found is holding power button 4 seconds until it shuts power.

I have not found any correspondance with what program i run, and no change in attached hardware.
And i have not altered screen saver or power saving settings from defaults.
BOINC is always running and i thought maybe it mess with my GPU but it say my GPU is not compatible.
(When tried in cauldron however it say it works, but that is irrelevant i think)

Any suggestion on how to track?

I think that your system is going to sleep so deeply that it forgets to check the mouse or keyboard. This might be due to the screen saver you are running? Could it be that it takes control over the system so that the latter cannot sense neither of the mouse and the keyboard?

Just try stopping the screen-saver for a session and see if all goes well after a while.

Actually the screen saver has nothing to do with energy management, you should check the energy management settings of your desktop environment.

Checked it: tools icon (close to menu button, KDE4), Hardware, Power saving:
Nothing in there enabled about sleeping or hibernating the computer.
Only to shut of screen after 2 minutes (My large screen consumes 145 W, and i often leave for the lab and get back.)
(And -added yesterday- after 10 minutes lock screen.)
