Migration From Mandriva 2010.2 Fails

Postby Nobody2 » Nov 15th, '11, 16:16

I am trying to migrate over to mageia from Mandriva 2010.2 64bit and cannot. I downloaded your gui update tool but mandriva would not install it. So I manually removed mandriva's repositories and added mageia's. Then I ran urpmi from a root console and it seemed to be going well but then failed after about 10 minutes.

Code: Select all

It looks like it is unable to replace several perl files. Is there a workaround for this? I searched the forums on this but was unable to find much. I really want to migrate over to you guys. I have used mandriva for many years but it is problems like this in the last couple versions that made me decide to leave them but couldn't find a distro I was happy with and I tried many! Mageia looks awesome and has all the tools that are unique to mandriva (especially the mcc which I am lost without) so I really want this migration to go through. I have not rebooted or shutdown my system and will not do so until I know whether or not it can be saved. I really don't want to fresh install if possible but will if there is no other solution. I did many reinstalls just recently trying to update to the 2011 version which was a disaster and ended up going back to 2010. Thank you for your time and all I can say is what a great job you guys have done with mageia!!! Can't wait to get it working.

I ran it again with a debug log. Here's the output if it helps.

Hi and welcome Nobody2!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah well migrating from Mandriva to Mageia.
My opinion, no solution: theoretically possible, but practical the weakest of choices.
My advise is really: save your important things and do a fresh install.
Saves you a lot of time, and you get a consistent system in return.

Ok I went ahead and did a fresh install today and all I can say it's like I never did anything. What I mean is that mageia is identical to mandriva 2010! I have a separate home partition so all my settings were migrated over so now I just have to get all my apps reinstalled. It looks great and I think the graphics look a bit sharper and crisper then mandriva.

The only issue I'm having is it's only running at about half the speed of 2010. Any suggestions on how to get the speed up?

My system is a dell inspiron 1721 64 x2 with 2gb of ram, ati radeon xpress 1250, sata2 hard drive ahci.

Could you please explain what exactly you refer to with "speed"? Also how do you measure this?
