Hi everyone,

I use Xubuntu on another computer, and since I have to upload jpg files to my website, I have to resize them from several MB down to less than 200 kb. On xubuntu, I used Nautilus, which has a resize file that can be added to the basic app, and that usually brings the photos down to around 300kb. From there, I use Squash to resize them again, and that usually does the trick just fine.

So with Mageia, what apps do batch resizing well and quickly? I've installed Nautilus, but I haven't found the resize file yet. I also downloaded Squash, since only two files were in the repositories. But I can't get Squash to run.

I also would like to find an app that checks for broken files and security issues. Is there one available that anyone recommends?

What is squash ? Where did you download it ?

I found Squash in the repository on Xubuntu, and although it's not in the reps that I have used so far on Mageia, there are 2 files that are given. So I downloaded it from sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/squashfs/

I imagine that there's a way to make it run, but since I'm still a novice to Linux, I don't know the trick to make it work. Or maybe it's incompatible. idk.

As an update, I see that Gwenview does batch resizing, and so it seems comparible to Nautilus. Still, since I've installed Nautilus an hour ago, I see that some "deep" changes have occurred. For example, my desktop image reverted back to the mageia default, and I don't see how to choose a new image; and Nautilus runs by default. It even put a "my computer" icon on the desktop!

Any suggestions regarding Squash (or similar app if necessary) greatly appreciated..

digikam will also do batch resizing for you.

The link you give is for squashfs. Squashfs is a file system used often when executing LiveCD distros in memory. It is not used for compressing images.

Silly me! I'll have to disinstall that package!

Here is the Squash I meant: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/squash

I see that it is a .deb file, so if I've understood correct, it won't work on Mageia because it has to be a .rpm file. Right?


An update on the Nautilus File Manager: when I powered on this morning, I see that Dolphin is running, and Nautilus is not. My desktop image came back, and the "my computer" icon is gone. My thought is that, if I call up Nautilus, it will "take over" again. Is this how they are supposed to work?

Also, where should I set up new apps? Should I use the "bin" file, or the "lib" file, or "share" or a different one? Just curious..
